MyVideoTab Toolbar

Also Known As: MyVideoTab browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is hp.myway.com?

MyVideoTab is a deceptive application developed by Mindspark Interactive Network (also known as IAC Applications). This app claims to allow users to watch various movies online, free of charge.

These claims often trick users into believing that MyVideoTab is legitimate and useful, however, this potentially unwanted program (PUP) often infiltrates systems without users' consent. In addition, MyVideoTab is categorized as a browser hijacker - a form of unwanted software that modifies web browser settings without permission.

hp.myway.com browser hijacker

Research shows that, once infiltrated, MyVideoTab assigns the Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to hp.myway.com. These changes may seem insignificant, however, users are unable to revert them. MyVideoTab reassigns these options when attempts are made to change them.

Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible and users are forced to visit hp.myway.com when they search via the URL bar or simply open a new browser tab. Therefore, the presence of the MyVideoTab browser hijacker severely diminishes the Internet browsing experience.

Furthermore, although MyVideoTab is not confirmed to gather information, many browser hijackers do. Research shows that these programs are likely to collect various sensitive information, including personal details. Developers sell the details to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

Therefore, information tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. In addition, some PUPs misuse system resources to mine cryptocurrency or run other unwanted processes, without users’ permission. In doing so, they also significantly reduce overall system performance.

Therefore, we strongly advise you to eliminate all browser hijackers (including MyVideoTab) without delay.

MyVideoTab's developers have released dozens of identical browser-hijacking apps. The list of examples includes (but is not limited to) TestOnlineSpeed, HoroscopeBuddy, ConvertersNow, and GifaPalooza. These apps offer different functions, however, all have identical behavior. MyVideoTab, and these other PUPs, are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.

Rather than giving any real value for regular users, browser-hijacking apps pose a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.

Furthermore, many browsers hijackers promote fake search engines. These often feed users with false search results and/or intrusive advertisements (coupons, banners, etc.) The delivered results and ads typically lead to malicious websites.

Furthermore, intrusive ads run scripts that download and install malware/PUPs. Thus, using a fake Internet search engine can lead to high-risk computer infections.

How did MyVideoTab install on my computer?

This browser hijacker is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, as mentioned above, MyVideoTab often infiltrates systems without permission. There are two main reasons for this: 1) lack of knowledge, and; 2) careless behavior.

Browser-hijacking apps are commonly distributed using intrusive ads and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party apps together with regular (mostly free) programs.

Developers do not properly disclose these installations - they conceal "bundled" apps within various sections (typically, the "Custom/Advanced" settings) of the download/installation processes. If you rush these processes and skip steps (and click various advertisements), you will expose your system to risk of various infections.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

You can prevent PUP infiltration by paying close attention when downloading/installing software, and browsing the Internet. Bear in mind that criminals proliferate PUPs by employing the "bundling" method. Therefore, carefully observe each window of the download/installation dialogues and opt-out of all additionally-included programs.

It is also important to note that third party download/installation tools are monetized by promoting dubious programs (the "bundling" method). Therefore, we strongly advise you to avoid using these tools.

In addition, be aware that many intrusive ads look legitimate, since criminals invest a great deal of resources into their design, however, they redirect to various dubious websites (e.g., adult dating, pornography, gambling, and so on).

Intrusive ads are often displayed by malicious adware-type apps. If you encounter them, immediately eliminate all suspicious programs and browser plug-ins. The key to computer safety is caution.
