Search.hmyutilitybox.co Redirect

Also Known As: My Utility Box browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is search.hmyutilitybox.co?

My Utility Box is a deceptive app that supposedly provides quick access to a number of other utility applications such as calculator, translator, planning tools, and so on. Judging on appearance alone, search.hmyutilitybox.co may seem legitimate and useful, however, this app usually infiltrates systems without permission.

In addition, it promotes a fake Internet search engine and continually gathers various sensitive data. For these reasons, My Utility Box is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.

search.hmyutilitybox.co browser hijacker

This PUP targets Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Following infiltration, My Utility Box assigns the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine options to search.hmyutilitybox.co (the aforementioned fake search engine). Furthermore, although these changes may seem insignificant, users are unable to revert them.

Research shows that My Utility Box continually reassigns browser settings when attempts are made to change them. Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible. Ultimately, users are encouraged to visit search.hmyutilitybox.co when they open a new browser tab or search via the URL bar. This significantly diminishes the web browsing experience.

As mentioned above, My Utility Box (and search.hmyutilitybox.co) record information relating to web browsing habits. Collected data is likely to contain personal details that developers later sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people misuse private information to generate revenue.

Thus, the presence of data-tracking apps can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall the My Utility Box browser hijacker and never return to search.hmyutilitybox.co

My Utility Box is identical to Easy To Watch TV, Your Transit Info Now, Your Free Online Forms, and dozens of other browser-hijacking applications developed by the same company. Although these apps offer different functionality, all have identical behavior.

My Utility Box and other browser hijackers are designed only to generate revenue for the developers, and thus they deliver no real value for regular users. Browser hijackers cause unwanted redirects (thereby promoting dubious websites, most of which are fake search engines) and gather sensitive information.

Some fake search engines feed users with misleading search results and intrusive advertisements (coupons, banners, and so on) that typically lead to potentially malicious websites. Therefore, using a fake Internet search engine can lead to high-risk computer infections.

How did search.hmyutilitybox.co install on my computer?

Research shows that, although My Utility Box has an official download website, it typically infiltrates systems without permission. The reasons for this are the careless behavior and lack of knowledge of many users.

Developers proliferate search.hmyutilitybox.co using intrusive advertising and "bundling" (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps). Developers hide "bundled" programs within various sections (in most cases "Advanced/Custom" settings) of the download or installation processes - they do not disclose these installations properly.

Furthermore, many users rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they often click advertisements and links without understanding the possible consequences. In doing so, they expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very cautious when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Research shows that many intrusive ads appear legitimate, as developers invest many resources into their design. Once clicked, however, they redirect to gambling, pornography, surveys, and other dubious sites.

In most cases, intrusive advertisements are delivered by adware-type PUPs. If you encounter these redirects, immediately check the list of installed apps/browser plug-ins and eliminate any suspicious entries.

Furthermore, carefully analyze each window (especially "Custom/Advanced" settings) of the download/installation dialogs - cancel all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them.

You are also advised to avoid using third party downloaders/installers, since they are often monetized using the "bundling" method. Apps should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links. The key to computer safety is caution.
