Surfnav.com Redirect

Also Known As: surfnav.com browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is surfnav.com?

Identical to okaytab.com, surfnav.com is a fake web search engine that supposedly enhances the browsing experience by generating improved results and providing quick access to dozens of popular websites.

Judging on appearance alone, surfnav.com may seem legitimate and useful, however, developers promote this site using browser-hijacking download/installation set-ups. Furthermore, surfnav.com gathers information relating to web browsing activity.

surfnav.com browser hijacker

Research shows that set-ups target Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Immediately after infiltration, set-ups assign the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to surfnav.com. In addition, they append this URL to the target of each browser shortcut.

Therefore, users are automatically redirected to surfnav.com when they enter a search query into the URL bar or simply open a new browser tab/window.

These redirects significantly diminish the browsing experience. Furthermore, users are unable to revert these changes - rogue set-ups stealthily install a number of "helper objects" (third party applications and/or browser plug-ins) that reassign browser options when attempts are made to change them. Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible.

Note also the problem of information tracking. Research shows that surfnav.com and "helper objects" continually record data relating to web browsing habits. Collected information often contains personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

These people generate revenue by misusing private information. Therefore, data tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you continually encounter unwanted redirects to surfnav.com, immediately eliminate all dubious applications and browser plug-ins. Do not return to this site.

surfnav.com is virtually identical to go.paradiskus.com, mystartpage.com, medianewpagesearch.com, and dozens of other fake search engines.

All claim to generate improved search results and, in some cases, provide other useful features (weather forecasts, shortcuts to popular websites, currency exchange rates, and so on), however, these promises are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy.

In fact, fake search engines deliver no value for regular users, cause unwanted redirects, and record user-system information. Some even feed users with misleading search results and intrusive advertisements, leading to potentially malicious sites. Therefore, using fake search engines risks computer infections.

How did surfnav.com install on my computer?

As mentioned above, surfnav.com is promoted using browser-hijacking set-ups. This deceptive marketing method is called "bundling". Many users rush download/installation processes and skip steps. Aware of this, developers hide information regarding modification of browser options within various sections (typically "Custom/Advanced" settings) of these processes.

By rushing and skipping steps, many users inadvertently grant set-ups permission to modify browser options, expose their systems to risk of various infections, and compromise their privacy.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), such as "helper objects", are also distributed using the "bundling" method and intrusive ads. To prevent PUP installation, be very cautious during the download/installation processes and when browsing the Internet. Select "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs.

Opt-out of all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them. Furthermore, software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers should never be used, since they are typically monetized by promoting PUPs (the "bundling" method).

Intrusive ads usually seem legitimate, but once clicked, redirect to surveys, gambling, pornography, and other dubious sites. Research shows that, in most cases, intrusive ads are delivered by adware-type PUPs.

If you encounter these redirects, immediately remove all dubious applications and browser plug-ins. Having a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and running is also paramount.
