Ads By Advertise (Mac)

What is Ads by Advertise?
"Ads by Advertise" is a tag used to mark certain intrusive advertisements displayed by potentially unwanted adware-type programs (PUPs). Research shows that these PUPs often target Mac OS and infiltrate without users' consent. As well as delivering intrusive ads, adware-type PUPs gather sensitive information.
Adware-type apps deliver intrusive ads (pop-ups, banners, etc.) with the "Ads by Advertise" tag. These are displayed using tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they conceal underlying website content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. Furthermore, intrusive ads can lead to malicious websites.
Even a single click might result in high-risk computer infections. Another important issue is data tracking. Most adware records Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, geo-locations, website URLs visited, pages viewed, queries entered into search engines, keystrokes, and other similar data relating to web browsing activity.
This information typically includes personal details that developers share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people misuse private information to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
If you encounter "Ads by Advertise" advertisements, immediately remove all dubious applications and browser plug-ins. You are advised to scan your system with a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite (e.g., Combo Cleaner) to remove all remnants.

The Internet is full of adware-type applications that deliver ads and gather sensitive information. For example, UnzipPro, MyShopcoupon, CompariShop, and many others. By offering various "useful features", potentially unwanted programs attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, their only purpose is to generate revenue for the developers.
They deliver no real value for regular users. Rather than enabling the functionality promised, PUPs pose a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.
How did potentially unwanted programs install on my computer?
Some PUPs have official download websites, however, due to the lack of knowledge and careless behavior of many users, PUPs often infiltrate the system without permission. Research shows that developers proliferate adware using intrusive advertising and "bundling" methods. Bundling is essentially stealth installation of PUPs together with regular programs.
Developers hide "bundled" apps within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes. Furthermore, many users often rush these procedures, skip steps, and are likely to click various advertisements without understanding the possible consequences.
This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs - users expose their systems to risk of infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software.
Be aware that intrusive advertisements may seem legitimate, but once clicked, redirect to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.) If you encounter them, immediately check the list of installed apps/extensions and eliminate any suspicious entries.
Furthermore, carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs, opt-out of all additionally-included programs, and decline offers to download/install them.
We also advise you to avoid using third party downloaders/installers, since developers monetize them by promoting PUPs. Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links.
