DjvuApp Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is DjvuApp?
DjvuApp (also known as WniDjView) is an open-source application that allows users to view the DjVu file format. This app is legitimate and useful, however, cyber criminals inject DjvuApp's source code with malicious scripts.
Therefore, some variants of this application are categorized as adware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). The main reasons for these negative associations are: 1) stealth installation without users' consent; 2) tracking of web browsing activity, and; 3) display of intrusive advertisements.
Malicious variants of DjvuApp track many data types that include personal details. Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, keystrokes, geo-locations, and other recorded information is shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
These people misuse private data to generate revenue. Therefore, the presence of an information-tracking app might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Another significant downside is display of intrusive advertisements. Research shows that adware-type apps continually generate coupon, banner, pop-up, and other ads.
These are delivered using various tools (e.g., "virtual layer") that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, they often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. In addition, intrusive ads can lead to malicious websites and execute scripts that stealthily download and install malware.
Therefore, even a single accidental click might result in high-risk computer infections. For these reasons, adware-type apps should be uninstalled immediately. If DjvuApp has infiltrated systems without your consent or you have downloaded/installed it from third party sources, we strongly advise you to remove this application immediately.

There are dozens of adware-type applications, all of which are very similar. They claim to enable "useful features", however, the only purpose of all PUPs is to generate revenue for the developers - claims to provide these features are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy.
Rather than enabling the functions promised, potentially unwanted programs generate intrusive advertisements and record sensitive information, thereby posing a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.
How did DjvuApp install on my computer?
Rogue versions of DjvuApp are typically distributed using the aforementioned intrusive advertisements, and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party applications together with regular software/apps). Developers hide "bundled" apps within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes.
Furthermore, many users are likely to rush these procedures, skip steps, and click advertisements. This behavior often leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs such as DjvuApp - users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software.
Developers invest many resources into intrusive ad design, thereby making them seem legitimate, however, most lead to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.) If you encounter such ads, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
In addition, carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs and opt-out of all additionally-included programs. Decline offers to download/install additional applications and opt-out of all additionally-included programs.
Third party downloaders/installers are monetized using the "bundling" method (they promote PUPs), and thus these tools should not be used. Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links. If your computer is already infected with DjvuApp, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
