Search.wizconvert.com Redirect (Mac)

Also Known As: Wiz Convert browser hijacker
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is search.wizconvert.com?

search.wizconvert.com is a fake search engine that supposedly enhances the browsing experience by generating improved results and allowing format conversion of various documents.

Judging on appearance alone, search.wizconvert.com may seem legitimate and useful, however, developers promote this site using a browser-hijacking application called Wiz Convert, which also offers identical functionality (file conversion). Furthermore, search.wizconvert.com and Wiz Convert record information relating to browsing activity.

search.wizconvert.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Wiz Convert stealthily infiltrates browsers (Safari, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome) and assigns the new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options to search.wizconvert.com. These changes may seem insignificant, however, users are unable to revert them. Browser-hijacking apps such as Wiz Convert reassign settings when attempts are made to change them.

Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible and users are forced to visit search.wizconvert.com when they open a new browser tab or search via the URL bar. This significantly diminishes the browsing experience.

Furthermore, search.wizconvert.com is a useless search engine - it merely redirects users to search.yahoo.com when a search query is entered. Therefore, users simply end up searching via the Yahoo search engine. Another significant downside is information tracking.

Research shows that search.wizconvert.com, and Wiz Convert continually record user-system information relating to browsing activity. The list of data types collected by fake search engines and browser hijackers usually includes IP addresses, website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, and other similar information relating to browsing activity.

Personal information might also be recorded. Developers share the data with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. Therefore, information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall the Wiz Convert browser hijacker and never visit search.wizconvert.com.

The internet is full of fake search engines that share similarities with search.wizconvert.com. Some examples are search.margamish.comsearch.prosearchtip.com, and cultsearch.pw, to name just a few.

By offering various "useful features" (more accurate search results, quick access to popular websites, local weather forecasts, and so on), fake search engines attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, the only purpose of websites such as search.wizconvert.com is to help developers generate revenue.

These sites provide no real value for regular users, cause unwanted redirects, and gather data. Some even feed users with misleading results and intrusive advertisements. Therefore, using fake search engines can lead to system infections.

How did search.wizconvert.com install on my computer?

Wiz Convert is free for anyone to download on its official website, however, browser-hijacking applications are also distributed using intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Intrusive advertisements redirect users to malicious websites and execute scripts designed to unwanted applications.

"Bundling" is essentially stealth installation of third party applications together with regular software. Developers know that users often rush download/installation processes and skip steps.

Therefore, they hide "bundled" apps within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes. By clicking advertisements and skipping download/installation steps, many users expose their systems to risk of infection.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the internet and downloading/installing software. Carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs and opt-out of all additionally-included programs.

You are advised to download apps from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should never be used. Bear in mind that intrusive advertisements usually seem legitimate, however, once clicked, they redirect to dubious websites (gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).

Intrusive advertisements are usually displayed by adware-type applications. If you encounter them, uninstall all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
