World Time News browser hijacker removal instructions

What is World Time News?

World Time News is a browser hijacker, a potentially unwanted application (PUA). However, its developers present it as a tool which supposed to allow users to access various news pages. This browser hijacker changes browsers settings, it promotes the app.worldtime.news fake search engine and gathers information about its user's browsing habits. It is categorized as PUA because most people download and install apps like World Time News unintentionally.

app.worldtime.news browser hijacker

PUAs like World Time News usually can be installed on Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers. After installation they change settings such as default search engine and new tab URL. World Time News sets them to app.worldtime.news. The problem is that none of these settings can be undone or modified in any other way, at least not until World Time News is uninstalled. Typically, if an attempt to change or undo them is made, browser hijackers assign their settings again. In this case it means that users who have World Time News installed are forced to visit the app.worldtime.news address when they open a browser (new window), new tab or enter a search query into URL bar. To avoid any of this users have to uninstall World Time News. As we mentioned in our introduction, app.worldtime.news is an address of a fake search engine. It is fake because when used, it opens bing.com and, in other words, it displays results that are generated by another search engine. This makes app.worldtime.new not only fake, but useless as well. Moreover, most browser hijackers and fake search engines collect various information, their developers share it with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. Collected data usually contains information such as IP addresses, geolocations, URLs of visited websites, entered search queries and other similar data. People who have apps like World Time News installed risk to experience various problems with privacy or browsing safety, or even become victims of identity theft. We strongly recommend to uninstall World Time News or other installed PUAs of this type as soon as possible.

World Time News is just one of the many applications of this type out there, other examples are: Maps Directions Home, Weather Forecast and QuickMail. Most of these apps supposed to provide users with various "useful" features/are advertised as handy. However, most PUAs are designed to generate revenue for their developers and other parties by collecting data and promoting questionable (fake) search engines.

How did World Time News install on my computer?

Usually people download and install PUAs through intrusive ads or when software developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Typically, this method is uses to trick people into installing (or/and downloading) potentially unwanted applications together with other, regular software. It is being achieved by including PUAs into various download or installation setups. Information about possible additional downloads or installations is usually placed in "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual" and in other similar parts of software setups. The problem is that not all people check these settings and by leaving them unchanged they give permission for some PUA to be downloaded or/and installed together with another, wanted program.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Download software (especially if it is free) from official websites. It is not recommended to use third party software downloaders/installers, torrent clients, eMule (and other Peer-to-Peer networks), unofficial pages, etc. Furthermore, download and install software properly: check every "Advanced", "Custom" (and other similar) setting and opt-out offers to download or install unwanted applications. Additionally, do not click on intrusive ads that are displayed on shady pages. When clicked, they redirect users to various untrustworthy websites or cause unwanted downloads (or even installations). If a default browser often opens unwanted pages or shows various ads, then remove all unwanted or unknown extensions, plug-ins or add-ons that are installed on it (if there are any). The same should be applied to unknown (unwanted) programs that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with World Time News, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
