What is mp3converter[.]to?
mp3converter[.]to allows visitors to download YouTube videos converted to MP3 and MP4 formats, however, this page uses rogue advertising networks and redirects users of its video conversion service to other untrusted websites. Do not use the services of these websites. Furthermore, it is illegal to download videos from YouTube.
At the time of research, mp3converter[.]to opened the sauwoaptain[.]com and MacKeeper download websites. Note that sauwoaptain[.]co is a rogue site. Websites of this type load dubious content or redirect visitors to a number (2-3) of other untrusted sites.
They are often opened through pages such as sauwoaptain[.]co and advertise various potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). In some cases, they attempt to trick visitors into downloading and installing malicious software. In any case, do not visit or trust sauwoaptain[.]co or other similar web pages.
Also avoid the MacKeeper PUA - these apps deliver no real value or features and often trick users into paying for activation by displaying fake scan results. Note that mp3converter[.]to might also open pages that promote PUAs such as browser hijackers and adware.
Browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing browser settings. Most collect browsing data and also sensitive, personal information. Adware feeds users with intrusive advertisements. People who click these ads are usually redirected to various untrusted web pages.
Sometimes they run scripts that cause download/installation of unwanted, potentially unwanted software. It is possible that mp3converter[.]to will lead to web pages that trick visitors into installing malicious programs such as Trojans and ransomware. Trojans are malicious programs designed to infect operating systems with other, similar programs.
Ransomware encrypts data and prevents victims accessing it unless they purchase decryption tools/keys from the cyber criminals. In summary, no websites opened via mp3converter[.]to can be trusted (mp3converter[.]to is therefore also untrusted).

mp3converter[.]to is similar to listentoyoutube[.]online, convertisseur-youtube-mp3[.]net, notube[.]net, and many other web pages. These websites use rogue advertising networks and redirect users to other untrusted, potentially malicious sites. If the browser opens these websites automatically, PUAs are probably already installed on the browser or operating system.
How did adware install on my computer?
Most people download and install unwanted apps inadvertently through deceptive ads that execute certain scripts, or through the set-ups of other, intentionally downloaded/installed software. This latter PUA distribution method is known as "bundling" and is used by developers who seek to trick people into downloading and installing unwanted apps with other, regular software.
They include PUAs into the download/installation set-ups. Typically, they hide information about additionally-included apps in settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced".
Many people cause unintentional downloads/installations when they download/install their software without checking or changing the settings and dismissing offers to download/install extra software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
It is not safe to download or install software (especially if it is free) through unofficial websites, third party downloaders and/or installers, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule or other such tools/channels - they are often used to distribute rogue, unwanted software.
The best way to download files and programs is using official websites and direct links. Check all "Advanced", "Custom", "Manual" and other similar options or settings of the download/installation setup. Dismiss any offers to download or install unwanted apps.
Intrusive advertisements that are displayed on dubious pages should not be clicked, since they often redirect people to untrusted websites or cause download/installation of various unwanted applications. Remove any unwanted extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on the browser immediately.
The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
