How to uninstall the Mapssrchpro browser hijacker

Also Known As: srchbar.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is Mapssrchpro?

mapssrchpro is one of many browser hijackers that promote addresses of fake search engines by changing certain browser settings.

This app promotes srchbar.com in this manner. Furthermore, apps of this type often gather information. Browser hijackers are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs), since people tend to download and install them inadvertently.

mapssrchpro redirects to srchbar.com

Typically, browser hijackers modify settings such as the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab. Note that mapssrchpro assigns these settings to srchbar.com so that users are forced to visit this site when they open a browser, new tab or enter search queries into the URL bar.

This fake search engine provides results generated by Bing and Yahoo (it simply redirects to search.yahoo.com or bing.com). Therefore, srchbar.com does not generate unique search results, and is thus useless and redundant. To remove this address from browser settings, users must uninstall Mapssrchpro.

Browser hijackers often prevent removal of reassigned addresses as long as they are installed. Furthermore, many browser hijackers gather browsing-related information (IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, etc.).

Developers sell the data to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it in other ways. Some browser hijackers might be capable of accessing sensitive, confidential information. Users with browsers hijacked by apps of this type are exposed to risk of problems relating to privacy, browsing safety or even identity theft.

Therefore, remove Mapssrchpro and other installed PUAs from browsers and operating systems immediately.

There are many browser hijackers on the internet. PDFEasyTool, My 2020 Fitness and Online Reviews App are just some examples.

Generally, these apps force users to use fake search engines (visit their addresses) and track information. Developers often advertise them as "useful apps" that supposedly deliver various features, improve the browsing experience, and so on, however, browser hijackers simply cause problems.

How did Mapssrchpro install on my computer?

In most cases, browser hijackers and other PUAs are downloaded and installed together with other (usually free) software included in the set-ups as "additional offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling".

Generally, offers to download or install PUAs are detailed in settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced", however, many users fail to check and change these settings when they download and install programs. Leaving the default settings unchanged allows download and installation of unwanted apps.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Unofficial, dubious websites, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g. eMule. torrent clients), third party downloaders, installers and other tools/channels are often used to distribute unwanted, potentially malicious apps. Therefore, download files and programs only from official websites and via direct links.

Set-ups that contain settings such as "Custom", "Advanced" should be checked for offers to download or install unwanted software. Unwanted downloads and installations can be prevented by declining such offers before completing the process.

Do not click intrusive advertisements that are displayed on dubious pages, since these can open untrusted websites or cause download/installation of unwanted apps. Remove all unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons and plug-ins that are installed on the browser.

Also remove programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Mapssrchpro, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
