How to remove ProgressMatch from Mac?

What is ProgressMatch?

ProgressMatch is designed to feed users with advertisements and promote Safe Finder via akamaihd.net. It also might be designed to gather various data, since many adware-type apps do. ProgressMatch is categorized as potentially unwanted application (PUAs) because most of the times users download and install adware unknowingly, inadvertently.

ProgressMatch adware

When installed, ProgressMatch serves coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and/or other types of advertisements. It is how software that is classified as adware generates revenue for developers. It is worthwhile to mention that ads displayed by adware often open various untrustworthy websites, sometimes even execute scripts designed to download (and/or install) more unwanted software. Therefore, it is not recommended or safe to click ads that appear due to installed adware like ProgressMatch. Furthermore, it is common that adware-type apps are designed to collect IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, and other browsing data. It is known that ProgressMatch can read sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, telephone numbers and other personal information as well. Such data could be sold to third parties (potentially cyber criminals), misused to make fraudulent transactions, purchases, steal accounts, identities, and/or generate revenue in other ways. Users of the ProgressMatch's app may become victims of identity theft, experience problems related to online privacy, browsing safety, lose access to personal account, suffer monetary loss, and/or other, serious problems. If this app is installed on a browser and/or operating system, then it should be uninstalled from it as soon as possible. The same applies to other apps of this type.

A couple of examples apps that are similar to ProgressMatch are OptimalPromo, AccessSide and ProgressStart. More often than not apps of this type are advertised as useful, legitimate. To be more precise, they supposed to deliver various features, improve web browsing experience and/or other value. Although, most of them are designed only to serve advertisements and/or gather various data. To sum up, software like ProgressMatch is useless and can cause various issues.

How did ProgressMatch install on my computer?

In some cases PUAs like ProgressMatch get downloaded and/or installed through deceptive ads that, when clicked, execute certain scripts designed to cause it. Although, more often it happens when users download and/or install programs that have PUAs included in their setups. It is common that developers distribute PUAs by using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". They include PUAs in download and/or installation setups of other programs as additional offers that can be declined through their "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings. Nevertheless, users often download and install software without even checking those settings and that is how they allow for included PUAs to be downloaded and/or installed as well.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended not to use third part downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites, and other similar channels as tools to download or install any files or programs. They should be downloaded only from official pages and through direct links. It is because the aforementioned channels often are used to distribute questionable, even malicious software. Also, it is important to check download and installation setups for "Custom", "Advanced" settings see if they contain offers to download and/or install additional, unwanted apps. Intrusive ads that are shown on unreliable, questionable websites should not be clicked - such ads can be designed to open untrustworthy websites or even download, install some unwanted software. Additionally, there should be no suspicious unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and/or add-ons installed on a browser and programs of this kind that installed on a computer. If your computer is already infected with ProgressMatch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
