What is ListenToRadio?
As its name suggests, ListenToRadio supposed to provide a quick access to radio stations and music websites. Although, the main purpose of this browser hijacker is to promote blpsearch.com address (fake search engine) by changing certain browser's settings. Typically, apps of this type not only modify settings but also collect various browsing-related and/or other data. Users often download and install such apps unknowingly, therefore, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
ListenToRadio sets blpsearch.com as an address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab. It does that with a purpose to make sure that users would visit this address when they open a browser, new tab and enter search queries into URL bar. When users search the web with a browser that is hijacked by ListenToRadio, they get redirected from blpsearch.com to search.yahoo.com. Simply said, this fake search engine displays results generated by a legitimate (Yahoo) search engine. In order to stop blpsearch.com from being opened on the aforementioned occasions (remove it from browser's settings) it is necessary to uninstall ListenToRadio first. Otherwise this app will reassign its settings after every attempt to change blpsearch.com into some other, preferred address. Another issue with most browser hijackers is that they gather browsing data. For example, IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, etc.). Although, they can be designed to collect sensitive information as well. How did ListenToRadio install on my computer?
In most cases users download and install browser hijackers and/or other PUAs when they are distributed by including them in download and/or installation setups of other programs as additional offers. Such distribution method is known as "bundling". In most cases offers to download and/or install additionally included apps can be found in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings of setups. The problem is that not all users check (and change) those settings and by leaving them unchanged they allow for potentially unwanted apps to be downloaded and/or installed together with software that they downloaded and/or installed willingly. In some cases users cause such downloads and/or installations by clicking unreliable, deceptive that ads designed to execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Applications and files should be downloaded only from official, trustworthy websites and through direct links. Examples of tools, channels that often are used to distribute unwanted or even malicious apps are various third party downloaders, installers, unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks like torrent clients, eMule, free file hosting sites. Also, unwanted downloads and installations can be prevented by declining offers to download and/or install unwanted apps before completing download and/or installation processes. Typically, such offers can be declined through setup's "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings. Additionally, it is recommended not to click ads that are displayed on shady pages: such ads can cause downloads, installations of unwanted software too. Besides, they often open various untrustworthy pages. If some suspicious, unwanted extension, plug-in and add-on is already installed on a browser, then it should be removed from it as soon as possible. Any programs of this kind should not be installed on the the operating system as well.
