How to uninstall the Login Assistant browser hijacker

Also Known As: Login Assistant Tab browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is Login Assistant?

Login Assistant is a browser hijacker which assigns certain browser settings to hp.hloginassistant.co. This app is also likely to gather information, especially browsing-related data. Users often download and install browser hijackers unintentionally and, for this reason, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

Login Assistant is distributed with another PUA called Hide My History.

hp.hloginassistant.co browser hijacker

Login Assistant promotes hp.hloginassistant.co by assigning it as the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab. Therefore, users are forced to visit this site when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.

Note that hp.hloginassistant.co is the address of a fake search engine, which displays results generated by Yahoo (it simply redirects users to search.yahoo.com). In most cases, users who have browsers hijacked by apps such as Login Assistant cannot remove the address of the fake search engine from the settings as long as the browser hijacker is installed.

Therefore, to stop the browser from opening hp.hloginassistant.co, Login Assistant must first be uninstalled. Furthermore, this app might record IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, and other browsing data. In some cases, these apps target private, sensitive data.

The developers sell the details to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse them to generate revenue in other ways. Browser hijackers can be the reason behind problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety or even identity theft. Therefore, never download or install PUAs and the same applies to Login Assistant and Hide My History.

Most browser hijackers have similar behavior: they promote the address of a fake search engine and collect data. Commonly, they are advertised as useful, legitimate apps, however, they are generally useless and can cause serious issues. Therefore, remove all browser hijackers from your browser and/or computer immediately.

Some examples of other apps classified as browser hijackers are PDFSearches, ListenToRadio and ConverterSearch.

How did Login Assistant install on my computer?

Users often download and install browser hijackers (or other PUAs) through the set-ups of other programs. I.e., when the apps are included in the set-ups as 'additional offers'. In most cases, these offers can be declined through settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced", however, many users fail to check and change these settings.

This allows PUAs to be infiltrate together together with the required programs. This distribution method is known as "bundling". Unwanted downloads and installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that run certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Do not use third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites, etc. to download or install files/programs. You are advised to use only official websites and direct links. Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings and decline offers to download or install additionally-included, unwanted applications.

Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious websites, since they can open other web pages of this kind or even cause download/installation of unwanted applications. Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons and plug-ins that are already installed on the browser, and programs of this kind installed on the computer.

If your computer is already infected with Login Assistant, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
