Now News Online browser hijacker removal instructions
What is Now News Online?
Now News Online is a typical browser hijacker - it promotes address of a fake search engine (hnownewsonline.com) by changing some of the browser settings. Also, apps of this type tend to be designed to gather information related to user's web browsing activities. It is worthwhile to mention that users often download and install apps like Now News Online unknowingly, unintentionally. For this reason browser hijackers are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Research shows that Now News Online is distributed together with another PUA called Hide My History.
After installation browser hijackers change settings such as address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab so that users would visit a certain address when they open a browser, new tab and enter search queries into URL bar. Now News Online changes the aforementioned settings to hnownewsonline.com (and/or search.hnownewsonline.com, hp.hnownewsonline.com) - an address of a fake search engine. It is fake because when users search the web through it, they are redirected to search.yahoo.com. In other words, this fake search engine displays results generated by Yahoo (a legitimate search engine) instead of generating its own, unique results. It is worthwhile to mention that when users have their browsers hijacked by apps like Now News Online they cannot undo the changes that were made by those apps unless they uninstall them. Therefore, hnownewsonline.com (and search.hnownewsonline.com, hp.hnownewsonline.com) can be removed from browser settings only when Now News Online is no longer installed. Additionally, browser hijackers can be designed to collect information such as geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites, IP addresses and other browsing data. In some cases apps of this type can access (record) personal details/information as well. In such cases there is a possibility that their developers could sell gathered data to third parties (who could be cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Therefore, users who have a browser hijacked by an app like Now News Online could experience issues related to online privacy, web browsing safety or even become victims of identity theft.

There are various apps that are categorized as browser hijackers, e.g., MyNewsFree, Easy Print Recipes and MusicStreamSearch. They supposed to include various features, improve web browsing experience, and/or be useful in some other way. However, more often than not they are useless and can be the culprit of various problems. Basically, most browser hijackers are designed only to help their developers to generate revenue.
How did Now News Online install on my computer?
Very often users download and/or install browser hijackers (or other PUAs) through download and/or installation setups of other programs. As a rule, such apps are mentioned and offers to download and/or install can be declined in their settings like "Custom", "Advanced". Unfortunately, users often do not check those settings, by leaving them unchanged they allow for additionally included PUAs to be downloaded and/or installed together with some other, intentionally downloaded and/or installed software. This potentially unwanted software distribution method is known as "bundling". Additionally, unwanted downloads and installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements: some ads (if clicked) are designed to execute certain scripts designed to download or install unwanted apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended not to finish any download and/or installation process without checking "Custom", "Advanced and other similar settings of a setup and declining offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Software (and files) should be downloaded only from official websites and via direct download links. It is advised not to use third party software downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks like eMule, torrent clients and so on, for that. Additionally, it is common for advertisements that appear on shady pages to redirect users to unreliable, dubious websites or even cause download and/or installation of some unwanted, potentially malicious software. Therefore, such ads should not be trusted. If there are some unwanted, suspicious apps (extensions, add-ons, or plug-ins) installed on a web browser, then such apps should be uninstalled as soon as possible. The same should be done with programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Now News Online, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
