What is MacCleanBooster?

MacCleanBooster is advertised as an app which is designed to clean Mac computers for better performance. Although, it is promoted on untrustworthy websites, also, its developers use questionable methods to distribute it. Therefore, MacCleanBooster is categorized as potentially unwanted application (PUA).

MacCleanBooster unwanted application

MacCleanBooster allows users to clean the Downloads folder, downloaded mail attachments, user logs, cache, Terminal cache, system logs, etc. It may be a legitimate application, however, it is advertised on questionable websites. It is common that apps that are categorized as PUAs do not function as they supposed to: they do not fix errors, clean computers, etc. Moreover, quite often such apps perform fake scans and ask users to activate them so they could remove detect issues. As a rule, their activation is not free. Another issue with PUAs is that they often are distributed together with some other apps of this type, for example, adware-type apps, browser hijackers. Adware is a type of software that serves advertisements, browser hijackers are designed to promote fake search engines by changing browser settings. Additionally, both adware-type apps and browser hijackers can be designed to collect information related to user's browsing habits and/or even some sensitive, personal information. To sum up, it advised not to trust apps that are advertised on shady websites, including MacCleanBooster. If any PUAs are already installed on a computer and/or browser, then they should be removed.

Some more examples of apps that are quite similar to MacCleanBooster in some way are MacMaster, Quick Mac Fixer and Total Mac Fixer. What most of these apps have in common is that they are advertised and/or distributed in questionable ways. Also, it is common that users download and install such apps unintentionally, unknowingly.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Quite often potentially unwanted applications are distributed by integrating them in download and/or installation setups of other programs. This distribution method is known as "bundling". In most cases offers to download and/or install included PUAs can be declined in "Advanced", "Custom", "Manual" or other settings of setups. When users download and/or install programs with PUAs integrated in their setups without changing the aforementioned settings, they download and/or install those apps as well. Also, sometimes unwanted downloads and/or installations are caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is common that third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (like eMule, torrent clients), unofficial pages and other similar tools, channels are used to distribute unwanted software. For this reason programs and files should be downloaded only from official pages and via direct links. Also, download and installation setups that have settings like "Advanced", "Custom" often include offers to download and/or install potentially unwanted software. Therefore, it is advised to always check those settings before completing downloads and installations. Ads that are displayed on questionable pages should not be clicked - they can be designed to open various untrustworthy, potentially malicious pages. In some cases they can cause downloads, installations of unwanted software. All unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons and/or plugins that are installed on a web browser should be removed. If there are any programs of this kind installed on the operating system, then they should be uninstalled too. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
