IConverterSearch browser hijacker removal instructions
What is IConverterSearch?
IConverterSearch is classified as a browser hijacker and is designed to hijack browsers by changing certain settings to iconvertersearch.com (the address of a fake search engine). It might also record data. Browser hijackers are often downloaded and installed unintentionally and, therefore, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Generally, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing certain browser settings such as the address of the homepage, new tab and default search engine. After installation, IConverterSearch sets them to iconvertersearch.com. Therefore, users are forced to visit iconvertersearch.com when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar. As mentioned, hmyappscenter.net is a fake search engine, and simply displays results generated by another search engine (Yahoo). I.e., it redirects users to search.yahoo.com. Users can only undo the changes that were made by a browser hijacker (remove the fake search engine from browser settings) when it is uninstalled. In this particular case, iconvertersearch.com can be removed from browser settings when IConverterSearch is no longer installed. Most browser hijackers collect various browsing-related details: IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, and other browsing data. In some cases, they record private, sensitive information. Developers sell the information to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Therefore, users who have these apps installed on their browsers and/or operating systems can become victims of identity theft, and experience problems relating to browsing safety, online privacy, and other issues.

To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner.
To summarize, browser hijackers are potentially unwanted applications that promote fake search engines and collect information. They are often advertised as useful and legitimate. They supposedly improve the browsing experience, include features, and provide quick access to various websites. In fact, they are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. More examples of PUAs of this type are AnyRadioSearch, RadioSearchs and Genius Pro.
How did IConverterSearch install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided. When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with IConverterSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
