How to remove the search.basicgeneration.com browser hijacker from Mac computers

What is search.basicgeneration.com?

search.basicgeneration.com appears in browser settings after installation of adware/browser hijackers (for example, ExecutiveOperation). This is a fake search engine that does not generate any unique results. Apps that promote fake search engines serve ads and collect various user-system information. They are, therefore, categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

search.basicgeneration.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Sites such as search.basicgeneration.com are promoted by apps that function as adware-type apps and browser hijackers. After installation, they change settings such as the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab to the address of a fake search engine (in this case, to search.basicgeneration.com). Depending on users' geolocations, search.basicgeneration.com provides results generated by Google or Yahoo - it simply redirects users to google.com or search.yahoo.com. Fake search engines can be removed from browser settings only when the browser hijackers that promote them are no longer installed on the browser or operating system. As mentioned, search.basicgeneration.com is promoted via apps that serve ads and collect data. They serve coupons, surveys, banners, pop-ups, and other types of ads. Users who click these ads arrive at untrusted pages or even allow the ads to cause download/installation of unwanted applications by running certain scripts. PUAs collect browsing data such as IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, etc. Some (including ExecutiveOperation) can read private, sensitive information. For example, passwords, credit card details and so on. This information is misused to make fraudulent purchases and transactions, to steal identities and accounts, and for other malicious purposes.

Some examples of other fake search engines are cybersearch.xyz, d2sri.com and search.locatorunit.com. Typically, they are useless and, in some cases, generate misleading results (including links to dubious web pages). In any case, fake search engines and the apps that promote them should never be used.

How did search.basicgeneration.com install on my computer?

Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes). Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts. Note: PUAs that are designed to promote search.basicgeneration.com are distributed via fake installers for Adobe Flash Player.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind. Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations. Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser. The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
