Search-Streamly browser hijacker removal instructions
What is Search-Streamly?
Search-Streamly is designed to promote the search-streamly.com address, a fake search engine. Like most apps of this type, it is designed to do that by changing certain browser settings. Additionally, it may be designed to gather information related user's browsing activities and/or other details. Most of the times users download and install browser hijackers unintentionally, unknowingly. Therefore, Search-Streamly and other apps of this type are called potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
As a rule, browser hijackers change browser settings such the address of a new tab, homepage, and default search engine. Search-Streamly is designed to change them to search-streamly.com. Therefore, when users open a browser, new tab or enter search queries, they are forced to visit search-streamly.com. It is a fake search engine because it provides results generated by Yahoo - search-streamly.com redirects users to search.yahoo.com. In other words, it does not generate unique results. In most cases users can undo the changes in browser settings that were made by a browser hijacker only when it is not longer installed. As mentioned in the introduction, Search-Streamly may be designed to collect certain data. In most cases browser hijackers target browsing data (e.g., geolocations, IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited websites). However, there are browser hijackers that can read sensitive, personal information as well. What is worse, their developers can sell gathered details to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or misuse them to generate revenue in some other ways. In such cases users could become victims of identity theft, have problems related to online privacy, browsing safety, or encounter other issues.

To sum up, a browser hijacker is a type of PUA that is designed to promote some fake search engine (its address) and can be designed to function as data collector. Simply said, an app of this type is useless to its users and is designed only to help its developer to generate revenue. A couple of examples of other browser hijackers are Bolobi web, Spacerin and MixedFin.
How did Search-Streamly install on my computer?
Usually it happens when users download and/or install programs that have "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings (or certain checkboxes) in their setups without changing (or unticking) them. In such cases they allow for PUAs that are integrated in setups to be downloaded and/or installed together with wanted programs. This distribution method of PUAs is known as "bundling". Also, sometimes unwanted downloads and/or installations can be caused by clicking deceptive, untrustworthy advertisements. Although, it applies only to advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts. As a rule, such ads appear on untrustworthy websites.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to download programs (and files) from official, legitimate websites, and via direct download links. Other sources, tools like third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites, etc., should not be used. The same applies to third party installers. Also, it is recommended to always check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings (or checkboxes) of any download and installation setup and see if they can be used to decline offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Advertisements that are displayed on shady pages should not be clicked as well - they can be designed to open potentially malicious websites or even run scripts that would cause download, and/or installation of some unwanted application. Unwanted apps (extensions, add-ons or plug-ins) that are already installed on a browser should be removed. Software of this kind that that is installed on the operating system should be uninstalled too. If your computer is already infected with Search-Streamly, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
