ProConverterSearch browser hijacker removal instructions
What is ProConverterSearch?
ProConverterSearch is a piece of rogue software, categorized as a browser hijacker. It operates by making modifications to browser settings in order to promote proconvertersearch.com - a fake search engine. Additionally, most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities and it is highly likely that ProConverterSearch has such functionalities. Due to the questionable techniques used to distribute ProConverterSearch, it is deemed to be a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application).
Browser hijackers assign the addresses of fake web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. ProConverterSearch also makes these modifications to browsers. To elaborate on how this affects the browsing quality: every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed - redirect to proconvertersearch.com. Illegitimate web searchers are rarely unable to provide search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Bing, Google and other genuine search engines. This is the case with proconvertersearch.com as well, it redirects to the Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine. Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users attempt to make to their browser and/or restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Hence, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without eliminating the software affecting it. What is more, ProConverterSearch can track data. It can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The gathered data usually contains personally identifiable information. This vulnerable data is then monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

GameSearchWeb, SmartStreamSearch and MovieSearchTV are a couple examples of other browser hijackers. This software appears legitimate and harmless. Users are lured into download/installation with offers of various "handy" functionalities. However, the promised functions are typically nonoperational. This applies to practically all PUAs. The sole purpose of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers. Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can modify browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), collect private information.
How did ProConverterSearch install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed through download/installation setups of other software. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user consent. Some PUAs have "official" promotional sites, from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
All software products must be researched before download/installation and/or purchase. It is advised to only use official and verified download channels. Since dubious sources, e.g. unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - often offer deceptive and/or bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive adverts appear legitimate, however they redirect to various unreliable and questionable webpages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so forth). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be checked and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - removed immediately from it. If your computer is already infected with ProConverterSearch, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
