How to remove the FreeSearchConverter browser hijacker

Also Known As: freesearchconverter.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is FreeSearchConverter?

FreeSearchConverter is a browser hijacker promoting the freesearchconverter.com fake search engine. This piece of software operates by assigning browser settings to its associated web search engine address.

Additionally, FreeSearchConverter collects browsing-related data. Since most users download/install browser hijackers inadvertently, they are also classified as Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs).

freesearchconverter.com browser hijacker

Browser hijackers assign bogus search engine addresses as the homepage, default search engine, and new tab/window URLs. These modifications may seem minor, but they significantly affect the browsing experience. To elaborate, with FreeSearchConverter installed, new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar redirect to freesearchconverter.com.

Fake search engines are seldom able to provide search results, and so they redirect or cause redirection chains leading to legitimate sites. The freesearchconverter.com web searcher is no exception to this, yet to where it redirects depends on users' geolocations - it redirects straight to the Yahoo (search.yahoo.com) search engine or freesearchconverter.com causes a redirection chain consisting of amazonaws, landdays.xyz, and concluding with the Bing (bing.com) search engine.

Browser hijackers can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers. Alternatively, this software can limit or deny access to the browser settings. Therefore, restoring an affected browser is impossible without removing the browser hijacker.

FreeSearchConverter also has data tracking capabilities. Information of interest includes URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, geolocations, and even personally identifiable details. Developers monetize the gathered data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

To summarize, data-tracking software can cause serious privacy issues, financial loss, and lead to identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

CoolStreamSearchGameSearcherGo SurfingReSearchConverter, and Mysearch Pro are some examples of browser hijackers. They may seem normal and offer various functionality, however, the features rarely work as advertised, and, in most cases, do not work at all.

This applies to most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers. PUAs modify browser, cause redirects, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private information.

How did FreeSearchConverter install on my computer?

PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission.

Some PUAs (including FreeSearchConverter) have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources, since dubious channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive or bundled content.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads may seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to various dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).

If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove any suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.

If your computer is already infected with FreeSearchConverter, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
