How to remove the Stay Web unwanted application

Also Known As: Stay Web redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is Stay Web?

The Stay Web app supposedly provides various features, however, this browser hijacker promotes a fake search engine (tailsearch.com) by changing certain browser settings.

Stay Web can read browsing histories, however, it is likely that it will also read other data.

People often download and install browser hijackers onto browsers or computers inadvertently. Therefore, Stay Web and other apps of this type are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

Stay Web browser hijacker

Most browser hijackers promote fake search engines by altering settings such as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab. As mentioned, Stay Web promotes tailsearch.com in this way, however, the app does not always make this change to the settings - it alternatively detects when users enter search queries into the URL bar and then redirects them to tailsearch.com. This site can redirect users to google.com or bing.com (through my-search.com and search-checker.com). I.e., Stay Web's search engine simply provides results generated by Google and Bing.

Fake search engines sometimes generate results that include links to potentially malicious pages and unwanted, deceptive advertisements. Neither tailsearch.com nor other address promoted by this browser hijacker are trusted. To remove this address from the browser settings, the browser hijacker must first be uninstalled.

Browser hijackers often gather browsing-related details such as Internet Protocol addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited sites, geolocations (or other browsing data) and also personal information (e.g., passwords, credit card details). The developers misuse collected to generate revenue. For example, they could sell it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or use it for marketing purposes.

In any case, you should remove Stay Web from browsers/computers.

More examples of other apps that are categorized as browser hijackers are SearchConverterOnline, TopIncognitoSearch, and Media Club. Typically, they are advertised as legitimate, useful applications that supposedly provide various features, however, PUAs should be avoided, since they are designed only to generate revenue for the developers by gathering browsing data and promoting fake search engines (and other addresses).

Browser hijacker should never be installed on browsers or operating systems.

Note that tailsearch.com is also promoted by other browser hijackers.

How did Stay Web install on my computer?

People often download and install unwanted apps inadvertently via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.

Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".

Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to download files and programs from official websites and via direct download links. Other tools and sources such as third party downloaders and installers, unofficial pages, and Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients) should not be used to download or install software.

Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings (or available checkboxes) for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Do not click ads on dubious websites, since they can be designed to open bogus web pages or cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind from the operating system.

If your computer is already infected with Stay Web, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
