SearchConverterIt browser hijacker removal instructions
What is SearchConverterIt?
SearchConverterIt is a piece of dubious software categorized as a browser hijacker. It operates by promoting the searchconverterit.com fake search engine through modifications made to the affected browser's settings. Additionally, SearchConverterIt spies on users' browsing activity. Due to the questionable techniques used in the distribution of browser hijackers, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications)
Browser hijackers primarily target browsers with large user bases. This software reassigns browsers' default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs - to fake web searcher addresses. SearchConverterIt makes these alterations to browsers when promoting searchconverterit.com. Hence, with this browser hijacker installed: every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to the searchconverterit.com search engine. Illegitimate web searchers are usually unable to provide search results, so they redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other genuine search engines. This also applies to searchconverterit.com; it redirects to Google (google.com). Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the settings outright. Therefore, restoring a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it.
SearchConverterIt has data tracking abilities, which is standard for browser hijackers. Targeted information includes (but is not limited to): visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, geolocations, and personally identifiable details. Browser hijacker developers monetize the collected data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on browsers/systems - can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - must be removed immediately upon detection.

StreamSearchWeb, Newtab, Movieapp Search, and Conf Search are some examples of browser hijackers. They look ordinary and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with offers of "handy" functionalities. However, the features seldom work as promised, and in most cases - they do not work at all. In fact, this is true of nearly all PUAs. The only goal of unwanted software is to generate profit for the developers; hence, functionality and user privacy are irrelevant. PUAs are designed to hijack browser, force-open untrustworthy and malicious sites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and gather private data.
How did SearchConverterIt install on my computer?
Select PUAs (e.g., SearchConverterIt) have "official" promotional/download webpages. These applications are commonly distributed through downloaders/installers of other programs. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g., ignored terms, used pre-set options, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the device. Intrusive adverts are also used to proliferate PUAs. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
t is recommended to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Additionally, all downloads must be performed from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful and/or bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, and other additions. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with SearchConverterIt, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
