Do not trust the Dogelon Mars (ELON) giveaway scam website

Also Known As: Fake Dogelon Mars (ELON) giveaway
Damage level: Medium

What is Dogelon Mars (ELON) giveaway scam?

One of the most popular crypto-related scam types is a giveaway scam offering participants a chance to multiply their cryptocurrency, for example, to get back double the amount of cryptocurrency deposit. It is common that scammers use names of well-known people (e.g., Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak) to trick people into sending them cryptocurrency.

Cryptocurrency transactions on the Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other networks are irreversible. Therefore, people who fall for these giveaway scams lose their money/cryptocurrency without a chance to get them back.

Dogelon Mars (ELON) giveaway scam

This particular giveaway scam is created to trick people into sending Dogelon Mars (ELON) cryptocurrency. Scammers behind it promise to send back five times more of what people send them. For example, people are promised to get 10,000,000,000 ELON for 2,000,000,000 ELON, 500,000,000,000 ELON for 100,000,000,000 ELON, 1,500,000,000,000 ELON for 300,000,000,000 ELON, and so forth.

Also, scammers offer bonuses. For example, they claim to send 125,000,000,000 ELON bonus for 25,000,000,000 ELON, 250,000,000,000 ELON for 50,000,000,000 ELON, 750,000,000,000 ELON for 150,000,000,000, and so forth. In order to participate in this giveaway, people are supposed to transfer the chosen amount of ELON to the provided wallet address.

In order to trick people into sending a larger amount of Dogelon Mars, scammers claim that there is a limited amount of the ELON cryptocurrency (10,000,000,000,000 ELON) that is going to be given away, and people can participate in this giveaway only once. Neither this nor any other similar crypto giveaway is real/legitimate.

It is noteworthy that giveaway scams (and other scams) can be promoted through potentially unwanted applications that most users download and install on their browsers or computers unknowingly. Quite often, apps of this kind are designed to promote shady, deceptive websites and collect data, and (or) generate advertisements.

It is common that PUAs collect addresses of visited websites, entered search queries, geolocations, IP addresses. There are PUAs that can read sensitive information.

Furthermore, their developers could sell gathered data to third parties (potentially cybercriminals), use it for marketing purposes, or monetize it in other ways. Examples of ads that PUAs generate are coupons, banners, surveys, pop-up ads.

Those ads can be used to promote questionable sites. In some cases, they can be designed to cause unwanted downloads, installations by executing certain scripts.

More examples of crypto giveaway scams are "Ethereum Giveaway Scam", "Doge Giveaway Scam", "Binance Giveaway Scam", and "SAFEMOON Giveaway Scam". It is important to mention that not all of these scams ask to send cryptocurrency.

In some cases, scammers use these websites to trick users into providing sensitive information (they offer cryptocurrency in exchange for certain details).

Quite often, giveaway scams are promoted via Twitter (fake accounts), YouTube, and other platforms. If a browser opens various scams or other questionable websites automatically, it is likely that it has a PUA installed on it.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Sometimes, potentially unwanted apps are distributed through deceptive advertisements by designing those ads to run certain scripts. Users cause unexpected downloads or installations by clicking on those ads.

It is worthwhile to mention that deceptive ads that are used to promote PUAs appear on untrustworthy websites. In other cases, potentially unwanted apps are distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".

Usually, bundled potentially unwanted apps are mentioned and can be opted out via "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings (or checkboxes) that downloaders, installers for other programs have. Users download or install PUAs with other programs when they finish downloads, installations without changing any of the aforementioned settings.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Applications should never be downloaded (or installed) via third-party downloaders (or installers), Peer-to-Peer networks like eMule, torrent clients, unofficial sites, and so on. It is advisable to trust official websites and direct links only.

Downloaders and installers that have "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings or checkboxes should be checked for bundled applications. Usually, those settings (or checkboxes) can be used to decline unwanted offers.

It should be done before finishing downloads, installations. One more way to avoid unwanted downloads, installations is by ignoring advertisements on shady pages.

In most cases those ads are used to advertise untrustworthy sites. However, some of those ads can be designed to download, install unwanted apps.

Any unwanted extensions, plug-ins or add-ons installed on a web browser and applications of this kind installed on the operating system should be uninstalled as soon as possible. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
