How to remove the Secure Way browser hijacker?

Also Known As: search.secureway.club redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is the Secure Way browser hijacker?

Secure Way is a rogue browser extension, which modifies browser settings to promote the search.secureway.club fake search engine. Due to this behavior, Secure Way is classified as a browser hijacker. Additionally, it has data tracking abilities that are used to spy on users' browsing activity. Since most users download/install browser hijackers unintentionally, they are also classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).

Secure Way browser hijacker in detail

Browser hijackers primarily target popular browsers with large user bases. Following successful installation, this software assigns addresses of fraudulent web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.

Secure Way operates in this manner as well. Hence, with this browser hijacker installed: search queries typed into the URL bar and new tabs/windows opened - redirect to search.secureway.club. Fake search engines are usually unable to generate search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Bing, Yahoo, Google, and other legitimate ones. Search.secureway.club is not an exception to this; it redirects to Bing (bing.com).

Browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers. Alternatively, this software can restrict or deny access to the browser settings. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the software hijacking it.

Furthermore, browser hijackers usually have data tracking abilities. Information of interest includes: URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so forth. Browser hijacker developers monetize the gathered data by sharing it with and selling it to third-parties.

To summarize, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. It is crucial to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers in general

GetGameSearchMovie Quick TabMyIncognitoSearchSportsSearchDirect, and MyStreamsSearch are some examples of browser hijackers. They appear harmless and offer "handy" functionalities. However, the advertised functions are typically nonoperational.

Nearly all PUAs entice users into download/installation and/or purchase with fake features. Functionality and user safety are irrelevant since the only goal of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers. PUAs are designed to hijack browsers, cause redirects, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect private data.

How did Secure Way install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed alongside other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". These supplements can be hidden within the "Custom/Advanced" settings or left unmentioned entirely.

Hence, by rushing through download/installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - users risk inadvertently allowing bundled content into their devices, thereby endangering the systems with potential infections.

Intrusive advertisements are also used to proliferate PUAs. Once clicked on, the adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission. Some PUAs may also have "official" promotional pages from which they can be downloaded and/or purchased.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended to research software before download/installation and/or purchase. Only official and verified download channels must be used. Dubious sources, e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer bundled and harmful content.

When downloading/installing, it is advised to read terms, study available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate; however, they redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).

In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, the device must be inspected and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with Secure Way, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
