How to eliminate ChannelParameter adware and the ads it displays?

Also Known As: Ads by ChannelParameter
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is ChannelParameter?

ChannelParameter is an adware-type app with browser hijacker traits. It is also classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application) due to the questionable methods used to distribute it.

ChannelParameter adware

ChannelParameter adware overview

Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, surveys, coupons, and other intrusive adverts on any visited website and/or different interfaces. The ads affect the browsing experience by overlaying webpage content and slowing down the browsing speed; they also endanger device and user safety.

Intrusive advertisements endorse untrustworthy, scam, and even malicious sites. What is more, some intrusive ads can download/install software (e.g., PUAs) without user permission - when they are clicked on.

Browser hijackers assign fraudulent web searcher addresses as browsers' default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs. Hence, web searches performed via the URL bar and new browser tabs/windows opened - redirect to the promoted address.

Fake search engines typically cannot generate search results, so they redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other genuine ones. Browser hijackers also use persistence-ensuring methods to prevent users from recovering their browsers.

Adware and browser hijackers usually have track data abilities. Information of interest includes: URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, IP addresses, personally identifiable details, etc. The gathered data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties.

In summary, the presence of unwanted applications on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware in general

EdgeAdvancedSearchMaster, and BoostResource are a few examples of apps within the adware classification. They appear legitimate and offer "handy" features, which are typically nonoperational. In fact, functionality and user safety are irrelevant for most PUAs. The sole purpose of unwanted apps is to generate profit at user expense.

How did ChannelParameter install on my computer?

PUAs are spread using the "bundling" tactic - packing regular programs with unwanted/malicious supplements. By rushing through download/installation processes - users risk allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent. PUAs may also have "official" download pages.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised to research software and only download from official/verified channels. Dubious sources, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc. - often offer bundled content.

When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, study possible options, and use the "Custom/Advanced" settings to opt-out from all additions. Intrusive adverts appear legitimate, yet they redirect to various questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).

Should users encounter such ads and/or redirects, they must check their devices and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected. If your computer is already infected with ChannelParameter, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
