How to eliminate the MySpace Tab browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is MySpace Tab?
MySpace Tab is an application that we discovered on a shady website offering to "download and install recommended Chrome extension". After testing the app, we learned that it is a browser hijacker that promotes a fake search engine. It changes some of the browser's settings to search.spaceytab.com.
MySpace Tab in detail
MySpace Tab promotes search.spaceytab.com by making it the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page. Search.spaceytab.com does not generate search results - it redirects to google.com (shows results generated by Google).
The problem with search engines is that they can generate misleading results and (or) show results generated by untrustworthy search engines. In most cases, browser hijackers do not allow users to remove a fake search engine from the settings while they are present.

When software is bundled with a browser hijacker, its downloader or installer has settings that can be used to deselect that browser hijacker. Browsers get hijacked when users download and (or) install software without changing "Custom", "Advanced", or similar settings.
How to avoid installation of unwanted applications?
Download applications (and files) from trustworthy sources such as official pages and legitimate platforms. Do not click on advertisements or notifications that shady, dubious websites display.
