Removal instructions for DimScreen adware and the ads it displays
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is DimScreen?
DimScreen is a rogue browser extension that our researchers found while inspecting dubious download webpages. It is endorsed as a tool capable of enabling dark mode for simple-design websites. After analyzing this piece of software, we determined that DimScreen operates as adware.
DimScreen adware overview
Adware enables the placement of various ads on visited sites and/or other interfaces. The delivered adverts promote various untrustworthy/harmful websites and software, online scams, and even malware. Furthermore, some intrusive advertisements can be triggered (by being clicked) to make downloads/installations without user permission.
It is noteworthy that any genuine products encountered via these ads are unlikely to be endorsed by their actual developers. Instead, this promotion is undertaken by scammers abusing the products' affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.
It has to be mentioned that advertising-supported software may require certain conditions to run intrusive advertisement campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system specs, visits to particular websites, etc.). However, regardless of whether DimScreen displays adverts or not, its presence on a system endangers device/user safety.
What is more, DimScreen has data tracking functionalities. Information of interest may include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial/banking data, and so on. The gathered information can be monetized via sale to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of software like DimScreen on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner.
We have analyzed countless adware-type applications; Auto Skip Ads, Cinemate, and Quick Files Download are just a couple of examples. This software typically appears genuine and promises "handy" functionalities. However, these functions seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.
How did DimScreen install on my computer?
We acquire DimScreen from its "official" promotional page. Adware is commonly pushed through questionable download webpages and scam sites. Users typically access such websites via redirects caused by mistyped URLs, pages using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive advertisements, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
Intrusive ads are used to distribute advertising-supported software as well. When clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent.
Adware can also be bundled (packed together) with regular programs. Download from untrustworthy channels (e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We highly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified sources. When installing, it is crucial to read terms, explore available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opt-out of all supplements.
Another recommendation is to exercise caution when browsing since fraudulent and malicious content usually appears harmless. For example, intrusive advertisements look legitimate yet redirect to questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you encounter such ads/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with DimScreen, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
