Removal instructions for CargoPreview adware and the adverts it delivers
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is CargoPreview?
Our research team discovered the CargoPreview rogue application while reviewing new submissions to VirusTotal. It displays ads and likely has other harmful capabilities. Due to this behavior, CargoPreview is classified as adware. This app belongs to the AdLoad malware family.
CargoPreview adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It operates by enabling the placement of advertisements (e.g., pop-ups, overlays, banners, coupons, etc.) on visited websites and/or other interfaces.
These ads primarily promote online scams, untrustworthy/harmful software, and even malware. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations.
Note that any genuine content encountered through these advertisements is most likely endorsed by scammers who abuse its affiliate programs in order to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software may need specific conditions to run intrusive ad campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system specs, visits to particular sites, etc.). However, regardless of whether CargoPreview displays adverts – its presence on a system remains a threat to device/user safety.
Additionally, AdLoad apps often have browser-hijacking qualities, although CargoPreview did not exhibit any during testing.
Furthermore, this rogue application likely has data-tracking functionalities. Information of interest typically includes: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related data, and so forth. The collected data can then be shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
To summarize, the presence of software like CargoPreview on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed thousands of adware-type apps; PoolDen, UrbanClassic, OptionsCircuit, BounceDaily, and BalanceStack are merely some examples.
Advertising-supported software usually appears legitimate and harmless. Users are enticed into downloading/installing this software with promises of various useful abilities. It must be mentioned that even if a piece of software operates as indicated by its promotional material – that is not a guarantee of either legitimacy or safety.
How did CargoPreview install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled with ordinary programs. The risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installation processes (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.).
Intrusive advertisements proliferate adware as well. When clicked on, some of the ads can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
Advertising-supported software can also have "official" promotional webpages, and it is endorsed on scam sites. Most users access these pages via redirects caused by websites using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, mistyped URLs, intrusive adverts, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/verified sources. Furthermore, installation processes must be treated with care, e.g., by reading terms, studying possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, and so on.
Another recommendation is to be vigilant when browsing since fake and dangerous online content usually appears legitimate and harmless. For example, intrusive advertisements may look innocuous – yet redirect to questionable/unreliable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads/redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with CargoPreview, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
