The malware is designed with a flexible configuration model that allows different operators to deploy the same binary with unique settings - server addresses, API keys, and campaign identifiers - without recompiling it. LabubaRAT contacts its operators through an encrypted HTTPS channel, regularly polling a remote server for new instructions. The malware's command-and-control (C2) panel was identified under the name "LabubaPanel". Local state is stored in a SQLite database file named nvctr_sys.db. If the primary channel is unavailable, it falls back to routing requests through Windows WebView2 or through DNS tunneling with Base32 encoding.

When it first runs, LabubaRAT profiles the infected computer and sends a registration report back to the attacker's server. This includes the hostname, CPU model, RAM, public IP address, connection type, and domain membership. The malware also scans for installed browsers and active security products, including Microsoft Defender, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Sophos, Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, and several others.

These capabilities allow an attacker to drop additional payloads, steal documents, or modify files on the system.

Screen capture is also supported - the RAT can silently take screenshots of the victim's desktop on demand. The SOCKS5 proxy function lets attackers route their own traffic through the victim's internet connection, effectively masking the attacker's origin or giving them access to network resources visible only from the victim's location.

Persistence and evasion

LabubaRAT establishes persistence by adding an entry to the Windows Registry under the current user's Run key (HKCU\Run), which causes it to launch automatically each time the user logs in. The malware accepts an --install argument to create this entry and an --uninstall argument to remove it.

For evasion, the sample is built as a legitimate-looking 64-bit Windows application carrying fake NVIDIA metadata. It uses a mutex named Local\NVIDIAContainerMonitor_SingleInstance to prevent multiple copies from running simultaneously - a behavioral trait of real software that helps it blend in with genuine NVIDIA processes.

Configuration values - including the C2 server address, API keys, and operator group tag - can be passed as Base64-encoded command-line arguments, making them harder to spot during basic log review. Additional settings are read from environment variables with the ZM_ prefix.
