What is SaleSlider?
Developed by Engaging Apps, SaleSlider is a rogue browser plug-in claiming to save time and money by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and displaying special deals/discounts on shopping websites. While such functionality may seem legitimate, users should be aware that SaleSlider is considered to be adware or a potentially unwanted application.
SaleSlider employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent. Following successful infiltration, this potentially unwanted application generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
SaleSlider generates various intrusive online advertisements including interstitial, pop-up, sponsored link, text-link, targeted video, and search ads. There is a high probability that clicking these ads will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
In addition, this rogue browser add-on monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording diverse software and hardware information. For example: IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, search queries entered, URLs visited, browser cookies, geolocations, and other details, which may be personally identifiable.
This behavior may result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate SaleSlider from your Internet browsers.
SaleSlider is similar to other rogue browser extensions created by Engaging Apps including, for example, PayLessWizard, Savings Season, and Coupon Server. These add-ons are useless for the user - their main purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
At time of research, SaleSlider was distributed via fake downloads (Java updates, browser updates, etc.) and free software 'download clients' used by freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com
Be aware that most of these websites employ small download programs (download clients) to monetize their free services by offering installation of advertised 'virus-free' browser plug-ins together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections.
To avoid installation of SaleSlider or other potentially unwanted applications, pay close attention during the download of free software and click 'Decline' when installation of any additional programs is offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications and allow you to remove them from the installation list. Users who have already installed SaleSlider and observe "Ads by SaleSlider" advertisements, should follow this removal guide to remove the extension from their Internet browsers.
