What is SaveMass?
Created by a company called 'CBS Group', SaveMass is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to save time and money by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and displaying the latest special deals/discounts available on shopping websites.
Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that SaveMass is categorized as adware since it employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
Following successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, SaveMass generates intrusive coupon advertisements when user visits online stores.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored since SaveMass collects various software and hardware information such as websites visited and activity on those pages (for example, search queries entered, clicks, impressions, etc.) In some cases, this recorded information may be personally identifiable.
This rogue browser extension provides no real value for the user. In fact, the dubious behavior of SaveMass diminishes browser performance, generates intrusive ads (which may lead to high-risk adware or malware infections), and could cause serious privacy issues or identity theft. For this reason, you are strongly advised to eliminate SaveMass from your system.
SaveMass is similar to other PUPs that infiltrate systems by using bundling. Examples include: Nextcoup, ShopSave, and Itsarealdeal. None of these are useful to the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads.
Research shows that SaveMass is mostly distributed using small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites such as download.com, softonic.com, and soft32.com. Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of promoted '100% legitimate' browser add-ons together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often results in adware or malware infections. Installation of SaveMass, or other potentially unwanted programs, can be prevented by closely inspecting each step of the free software download process and never accepting installation of any additional programs offered.
Furthermore, all software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for Installation and allow you to opt out. If you have already installed SaveMass adware, read the removal instructions provided to eliminate this PUP from your Internet browsers.
