What is SmarterPower?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, SmarterPower is a rogue browser extension claiming to enhance users' Internet browsing experience by enabling coupons, comparison shopping, and other functions.
SmarterPower is compatible with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome and employs a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional programs together with the chosen software) to install on these browsers without users' consent.
Although this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, be aware that SmarterPower is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP). Following successful infiltration, this rogue browser add-on generates numerous intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
These intrusive advertisements include banner, interstitial, transitional, in-text, search, and full-page ads. It is highly probable that clicking these advertisements will lead to high-risk adware or malware infections.
Furthermore, this potentially unwanted program continually monitors users' Internet browsing activity by collecting information such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, unique identifier numbers, search queries entered, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other details.
None of these programs add any value for the user. SuperWeb LLC intentionally releases identical browser plug-ins under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware software, since the purpose of these extensions is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads.
The dubious behavior of this adware may lead to serious privacy issues or identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate SmarterPower from your Internet browsers.
Research shows that most users inadvertently install adware during download of free software via small programs called 'download managers' on freeware download websites including download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com.
Download managers are used to monetize these websites' free services by offering installation of advertised (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser add-ons together with the chosen free software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to adware or malware infections.
To prevent installation of SmarterPower, or other similar PUPs, pay close attention during the download of free software and click 'Decline' if installation of any additional applications is offered.
In addition, software downloaded from the Internet should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options - this will reveal any hidden applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
If your computer is infected with SmaterPower, and you experience "SmarterPower Deals", "Ads by SmarterPower", and "Powered by SmarterPower" advertisements while surfing the Internet, read the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers.
