What is Finance Alert?
Created by Valid Applications, Finance Alert is a rogue application claiming to update users with the latest finance-related news. On initial inspection, this functionality may seem legitimate and useful, however, be aware that Finance Alert is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted program (PUP).
These associations are made due to a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) employed by Finance Alert to install on Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome) without users' permission.
After successful infiltration, Finance Alert generates intrusive online advertisements and tracks users' Internet browsing activity.
Advertisements generated by this rogue application include (but are not limited to) banner, pop-up/pop-under, in-text, interstitial, and text ads. There is a high probability that clicking these advertisements will cause further adware or malware infections.
In addition, users' Internet browsing activity is continually monitored, since Finance Alert records various software and hardware information such as device identifiers, operating system and browser types, browser data (website URLs visited, history, cookies, search queries entered, pages viewed, etc.), a list of installed applications, geographic locations, IP addresses, and other similar data that may be personally identifiable.
This behavior could result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft, and therefore, you are strongly advised to eliminate Finance Alert from your Internet browsers.
There are many applications similar to Finance Alert. Examples include Insta Share, PriceFountain, and Lights Off among many others. Neither Finance Alert, nor any of these other applications, provide any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate revenue by the display of intrusive online ads and sharing collected information with third parties.
Research shows that most adware is distributed via small download programs called 'download managers', 'download clients', 'installers', etc., on freeware download websites such as download.com, soft32.com, and softonic.com.
Download managers are used by these websites as free services monetization tools, since they offer installation of promoted (according to the developers, '100% legitimate and virus-free') browser extensions together with the chosen software. Thus, reckless download and installation of freeware often leads to adware or malware infections.
This situation can be prevented by closely observing each step of the free software download process and clicking 'Decline' if installation of any additional applications is offered.
Furthermore, if you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation and allow you to decline them. If you have installed Finance Alert, and you experience online ads while surfing the Internet, follow this removal guide to uninstall it from your system.
