What is Wander Burst?
Wander Burst is a deceptive browser extension claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling various functionality
- "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Wander Burst product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!"
On initial inspection, this add-on may appear legitimate and useful, however, Wander Burst is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). This bogus plug-in infiltrates Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox without users' consent. It then displays intrusive online advertisements and tracks Internet browsing activity.
Wander Burst employs a virtual layer to display search, pop-up, banner, interstitial, transitional, full-page, and other similar ads. Some of these ads open new browser tabs/windows, thereby increasing the chance of accidental user clicks. Note that content displayed via the virtual layer does not originate from the visited websites.
Most of the ads lead to e-commerce websites (for example, online stores) and they may seem harmless. Despite this, others may redirect to bogus websites containing infectious content - there is a high probability that clicking them will result in further computer infections.
This gathered information is later shared with third parties, and therefore, the presence of Wander Burst adware on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall Wander Burst immediately.
This adware is developed by SuperWeb LLC, who have released several hundreds PUPs identical to Wander Burst.
The company releases identical apps under different names to prevent detection by anti-spyware and anti-virus suites. Swift Record, Computer Chair, and Jump Flip are just some examples of applications identical to Wander Burst and which claim to improve the Internet browsing experience.
In fact, none provide the features promised. The purpose of adware such as Wander Burst is to generate revenue by displaying intrusive online ads and collecting personally identifiable information. These apps are useless to the user.
How did Wander Burst install on my computer?
Wander Burst is often distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party apps with regular software.
Many users rush the download and installation processes. Bogus third party apps are usually concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings, and thus, by skipping download/installation steps, users inadvertently install rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Never rush the download or installation procedures. Closely follow each step of the software download procedure and ensure that only the selected application is downloaded.
Furthermore, programs should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick', 'Typical' or 'Regular' - this will reveal any bundled software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
