EverydayLookup Toolbar

Also Known As: EverydayLookup browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is EverydayLookup?

According to the developers (Mindspark Interactive Network), EverydayLookup is a legitimate browser extension that allows users to find area/zip codes, phone numbers, addresses, and other similar information - "Quickly search addresses, landline phone numbers, area codes, zip codes and more. Find relatives, friends, acquaintances with access to online White Pages."

These fake promises are delivered to give the impression of legitimate and useful software, however, EverydayLookup is categorized as a browser hijacker and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). After stealthily installing on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, this extension modifies browser settings and monitors Internet browsing activity.

everydaylookup toolbar homepage

This browser toolbar modifies the default search engine, new tab URL, and homepage settings by assigning them to the ask.com website. In addition, EverydayLookup installs a number of deceptive applications/browser extensions designed to prevent users from restoring browsers to their previous states.

By modifying these setting and causing unwanted browser redirects, EverydayLookup significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience. In addition, EverydayLookup browser toolbar continually tracks Internet browsing activity and gathers various system/user information.

Mindspark Interactive Network collaborates with a number of third party companies with whom it shares collected data. This shared information can be personally identifiable, and therefore, having this toolbar installed on your system can lead to various privacy issues. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to uninstall EverydayLookup.

The developers of EverydayLookup have released a number of PUPs including EverydayLookup, MetroHotspot, DailyRecipeGuide, ConvertAnyFile, and PConverter offering different features.

Despite this, they all have identical behavior. Applications developed by Mindspark Interactive Network are designed to cause unwanted browser redirects and collect various information to generate revenue - they provide no real value to users.

How did EverydayLookup install on my computer?

Although it has an official download website, EverydayLookup is likely to be distributed as a 'bundle' with other software. The developers are aware that many users lack caution when downloading and installing software. Therefore, they intentionally hide installation of bogus apps within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.

Unaware of this, users often skip this section, thereby inadvertently installing PUPs such as EverydayLookup.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

There are two main steps you should take to prevent installation of rogue apps. Firsly, closely analyze each step of the software download procedure, declining all offers to download/install additional applications.

Secondly, never rush the installation process and use the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any concealed third party software listed for installation and enable you to cancel it.
