What is Discover Treasure?
Created by SuperWeb LLC, Discover Treasure is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience by enabling comparison shopping, displaying coupons, and providing other online-shopping related features - "We're passionate about improving web by providing the best tools to enhance the browsing experience, from searching the web to comparing online deals to find the best prices. We've combined all of our great ideas into the Discover Treasure product suite, a FREE set of tools that work to make your browsing experience... better!".
These false claims often trick users into believing that Discover Treasure is a legitimate browser extension, however, be aware that this app is categorized as adware, since it stealthily infiltrates systems, generates intrusive online advertisements, and collects various Internet browsing-related information.
The types of collected data include website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, unique identifier numbers and IP addresses. This recorded information is shared with third party companies who can misuse it to generate revenue. Furthermore, some details might be personally identifiable, and thus, this beahvior can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft.
Discover Treasure generates various intrusive online advertisements such as banner, pop-up, coupon, interstitial, transitional, full-page, and search ads. All are displayed using a 'virtual layer' and do not originate from the visited sites. By concealing underlying web content, these advertisements significantly diminish the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, some redirect to malicious sites containing infectious content - these can lead to high-risk adware or malware infections when clicked. For the above reasons, Discover Treasure should be uninstalled immediately.
Discover Treasure is not the only application developed by SuperWeb LLC. There are tens of identical PUPs released under different names by this company including, for example, Sonic Train, Sharp Angle, and Treasure Track. SuperWeb LLC intentionally releases numerous adware-type apps to prevent detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus suites.
All (including Discover Treasure) are designed to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than providing the functionality promised, they deliver intrusive online advertisements and collect personally identifiable information.
How did Discover Treasure install on my computer?
This PUP is distributed using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of third party applications with regular software/apps), and therefore, it usually infiltrates systems without users' permission. This method is popular and effective, since many users do not pay enough attention during the download and installation processes.
By rushing and skipping most/all steps, they inadvertently install PUPs such as Discover Treasure hidden within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The key to computer safety is caution. Be attentive when downloading and installing software. Both of these processes must be performed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options. Opt-out of all bundled applications listed for download/installation, since third party software is mostly rogue.
