Elastisearch.com Redirect

Also Known As: ElastiSearch browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is elastisearch.com?

elastisearch.com is a fake web search engine that, according to the developers, enhances web browsing experience by generating improved results. Judging on the appearance alone, elastisearch.com may seem appropriate and handy. However, this is false.

Developers promote this website by using a browser-hijacking app called ElastiSearch. Moreover, both elastisearch.com and ElastiSearch are designed to record information about user's web browsing activity.

elastisearch.com browser hijacker

ElastiSearch targets Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. It is designed to assign browsers' new tab URL, default search engine, and homepage options as elastisearch.com. What's more important is that ElastiSearch does not allow users to revert these changes. It continues to reassign said options every time someone attempts to change.

Hence, returning browsers to their previous states simply becomes impossible. By forcing users to visit elastisearch.com site every time they open a new browsing tab or search the web via URL bar ElastiSearch significantly decreases their web browsing experience. Another noteworthy issue is information tracking.

The problem is that both elastisearch.com and ElastiSearch are designed to record information about user's web browsing habits. IP addresses, website URLs visited, search queries, and other collected info typically includes personal details.

In addition, developers share it with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who generate revenue by misusing personal information. Therefore, data tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Users who encounter redirects to elastisearch.com should immediately eliminate ElastiSearch browser hijacker and never return to this site again.

There are dozens of fake web search engines similar to elastisearch.com. search.searchswift.co, search.searchresults.com, my-search.com - these are only few examples from a long list. All claim to provide various "useful features" (improved search results, weather forecast, shortcuts to popular websites, and similar).

Yet such claims are merely attempts to create the impression of legitimacy and usefulness. These websites have only one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, instead of giving any real value for regular users, fake search engines cause unwanted redirects and gather sensitive data.

Some even generate misleading search results and/or intrusive advertisements (both leading to malicious websites). This means that usage of any fake web search engine may lead to various computer infections.

How did ElastiSearch install on my computer?

ElastiSearch is free for anyone to download at it's official website. However, due to users' lack of knowledge and reckless behavior, this browser hijacker often infiltrates the system without a permission. Developers proliferate this browser hijacker by using intrusive advertising and "bundling" methods.

Intrusive advertisements redirect users to malicious websites and/or execute scripts that download and install malware/potentially unwanted programs (PUPs). "Bundling" is an undercover installation of third party software together with the regular apps.

The problem is that PUPs' developers are not honest enough to disclose such information properly - all "bundled" programs are hidden behind various sections (e.g, "Custom/Advanced" settings) of download or either installation processes.

Vast majority of users are very likely to rush these processes and skip most of the steps. In addition, they often click on various advertisements without thinking about possible consequences. Such reckless behavior often leads inadvertent installation of PUPs like ElastiSearch.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

In order to prevent this situation users must be very cautious when browsing the Internet, as well as downloading/installing software. Always bear in mind that intrusive ads typically look completely appropriate. Once clicked, however, ads expose themselves by redirecting to unreliable websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and similar).

In most cases, such adverts are delivered by adware-type PUPs. Hence, users who encounter such redirects should immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. It is also extremely important to carefully analyze each step of download/installation processes and opt-out all additionally included programs.

We advise users to download software only from official sources, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, which is why they should never be used. The key to computer safety is caution.
