Searchforrecipes-svc.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is searchforrecipes-svc.com?
searchforrecipes-svc.com is another fake search engine presented as 'useful'. In this particular case, it is promoted using a browser hijacker, a potentially unwanted application (PUA) called Search for Recipe, which supposedly allows users to search for popular, free recipes directly from the browser.
Many people download and install PUAs such as this unintentionally. Furthermore, these (and the fake search engines they promote) continually record information regarding users' browsing habits.
Typically, browser hijackers can be installed on popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer. Once installed, Search for Recipe assigns searchforrecipes-svc.com as the default search engine, homepage, and new browser tab URL.
Therefore, users with this PUA installed are forced to visit this website when they open a browser, new tab, or search via the URL bar (enter a search query into it). These modifications may seem insignificant, however, they cannot be undone unless Search for Recipe is uninstalled. Most browser hijackers prevent people from changing settings they appoint.
If an attempt to change or undo them is made, browser hijackers reassign the settings. Another problem with Search for Recipe and searchforrecipes-svc.com is that they collect various user-system information such as geo-locations, search queries, IP addresses, URLs of visited websites, and so on. Many PUAs and fake search engines also record sensitive details.
Developers share all information with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. People who have browser hijackers installed on their systems, and use fake search engines, will experience problems relating to privacy, browsing safety, or even identity theft. Therefore, all unwanted apps should be uninstalled immediately.

Most are promoted as useful and capable of providing users with various features - in this case, with quick access to websites containing free recipes. In fact, these promotions are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy and trick people into using these sites.
Many fake search engines cause unwanted redirects, collect information, etc., thus allowing developers to generate revenue. Few provide the features promised or give any real value.
How did Search for Recipe install on my computer?
In some cases, PUAs can be downloaded from their official websites, however, most people download/install them unintentionally. Generally, apps of type are installed through clicked intrusive (deceptive) ads or when software developers use the "bundling" method.
Bundling is used to trick users into downloading/installing PUAs with other, regular software by hiding them in "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings/options of the download or installation set-ups.
Information about the inclusion of unwanted apps with set-ups is not properly disclosed, however, unwanted installations (or downloads) happen only if people leave all available setup options unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The safest way to download software is from official/trustworthy sources. Third party software downloaders/installers, torrent clients, eMule, other Peer-to-Peer networks and unofficial websites should be avoided. Additionally, check "Advanced", "Custom" and other options and settings of any download or installation setup.
Deselect offers to install or download unwanted apps and only then finish the installation or download process. Avoid clicking intrusive ads, since many are malicious. Untrustworthy advertisements may seem legitimate however, once clicked, they often redirect to dubious websites (gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).
If you encounter ads that that cause unwanted redirects (or these redirects happen even without having to click any ads), check installed plug-ins, add-ons, and extensions on your browser, and unwanted programs on your computer. Uninstall unwanted/unknown entries immediately.
If your computer is already infected with Search for Recipe, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
