Search.hemailaccessonline.com Redirect

Also Known As: Email Access Online browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is search.hemailaccessonline.com?

search.hemailaccessonline.com is presented as a useful, fast search engine that delivers improved results and includes quick links to websites such as Yahoo, Gmail, and so on. In fact, this site is a fake search engine promoted through the Email Access Online toolbar, which is is classified as a browser hijacker.

Note that search.hemailaccessonline.com is categorized as a potentially unwanted application/program (PUA). When installed, it makes changes to browser settings and continually records information relating to users' browsing activity.

search.hemailaccessonline.com browser hijacker

When installed, Email Access Online places a search toolbar on the desktop that, if used, opens a browser and displays results generated by the Yahoo search engine (it redirects to search.yahoo.com). Furthermore, Email Access Online affects the default browser by changing settings.

This PUA assigns search.hemailaccessonline.com as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL. In this way, it forces users to visit this website and use the fake search engine when they open a browser, new tab, or search using URL bar.

These changes can only be reverted by uninstalling Email Access Online, otherwise it will reassign settings when attempts are made to change them. Another problem with most applications of this type and fake search engines is that they operate as information tracking tools.

They are used to collect data such as IP addresses, search queries, geo-locations, URLs of visited websites, and other similar details. Some PUAs and fake search engines also gather personal details. Developers continually share the data with other parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who use misuse it to generate revenue.

We recommend that you uninstall Email Access Online immediately and avoid using dubious fake search engines in future. These PUAs might cause privacy/browsing safety problems or even identity theft.

Most fake search engines are virtually identical: they generate revenue for their developers by collecting information and causing unwanted redirects. Developers attempt to trick people into using them by offering supposedly useful features and other benefits.

In fact, most deliver none of the functionality promised or give any real value for regular users. On the contrary, search engines cause a number of problems. Some examples of other search engines of this type are feed.thegamesearcher.com, search.hgomaps.co, and myweathercenter.co.

How did Email Access Online install on my computer?

Some PUAs are available for download on websites that developers use to promote them, however, most people with these unwanted apps installed on their systems download and install them unintentionally.

This happens when clicked intrusive advertisements trigger download/installation of a PUA or when software developers use the "bundling" method to trick people into downloading/installing them. Bundling is a deceptive marketing method used to trick people into rogue download/installation of PUAs during download/installation of other software.

Generally, information about the inclusion of these apps into software download/installation set-ups is not properly disclosed. Developers hide the details in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of the download/installation set-ups. Note, however, that these unwanted installations could not happen without careless behavior by many users: PUAs are often installed when people leave setup options unchanged or do not even check them.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

To avoid installation of potentially unwanted apps, choose software download channels carefully. Download using official and trustworthy websites or other sources of this kind. Do not use third party software downloaders (and installers), unofficial websites, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule, or other such tools. Inspect each download/installation step.

Check all available settings such as "Advanced", "Custom", etc. and deselect offers to download/install additionally-included (potentially unwanted) apps. Furthermore, avoid clicking ads that are displayed on unofficial, dubious websites. These often cause redirects to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other pages of this kind.

If you encounter intrusive ads of this type or unwanted redirects, check installed apps on your browser and programs on the operating system. All unknown/unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons should be removed immediately (the same applies to programs installed on the operating system).

If your computer is already infected with Email Access Online, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
