What is search.roterismus.com?
Virtually identical to search.genieosearch.com, search.mapsonlinepro.com, search.convertersearch.com, and countless others, search.roterismus.com is a fake search engine. It supposedly enhances the browsing experience by providing improved search results.
It has a professional design similar to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other genuine search engines, however, in most cases, these fake search engines are unable to generate unique results. They are usually promoted by browser hijacking applications, which make unauthorized changes to browsers.
Furthermore, search.roterismus.com monitors and records data relating to users' browsing activity.
Common targets of browser hijackers are Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, and other popular browsers. These applications operate by assigning their fake search engines as the browser homepage, default search engine, and new tab/window URL.
Therefore, a hijacking application promoting search.roterismus.com would redirect to this address when a new browser tab/window is opened or a search query is typed into the URL bar. Note that search.roterismus.com is unable to generate results, and so it redirects to a legitimate search engine (search.yahoo.com).
Additionally, browser hijackers stealthily install "helper objects", third party apps or browser extensions/plug-ins. These additions reset any changes users attempt to make to their browsers. Therefore, while these modifications may seem relatively minor and easy to undo, without removal of the browser hijacker, it is impossible.
As mentioned, search.roterismus.com and the "helper objects" have data tracking abilities. By monitoring browsing activity (URLs visited, web pages viewed, search queries, etc.), they inevitably find and record users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations, and private details).
Therefore, the presence of data tracking content on systems can lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss, and even identity theft. If you experience redirects to search.roterismus.com or similar websites, remove all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins.

Nearly all fake search engines are identical. They typically offer improved search results and sometimes advertise other "useful" features, however, these sites simply generate revenue for their developers and have no real value to regular users. Fake search engines cause redirects and collect private data. thereby threatening device and user safety.
How did search.roterismus.com install on my computer?
Developers of search.roterismus.com promote the site through browser hijacking and similar rogue applications. These apps are often distributed together regular software. This deceptive marketing method of packing normal programs with Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) is called "bundling".
This technique is widely used by developers of unwanted content, and is successful in proliferating their products. By rushing through the download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options), many users endanger their devices with various system infiltrations and infections.
Some PUAs have "official" download websites, on which they are commonly endorsed as "free" software. Additionally, PUAs proliferate through intrusive advertisements. Once clicked, these ads can execute scripts designed to download/install PUAs, without user permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are strongly advised to research files and software to verify its legitimacy, before downloading/installing. Use only trustworthy and verified sources for downloading.
Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.), unofficial and free file-hosting websites, third party downloaders and similar channels are classed as untrustworthy and should not be used. These dubious sources are far more likely to offer deceptive or bundled software.
Download and installation processes should be treated with caution. Read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out of downloading/installing additional apps, tools, features, etc.
When browsing, avoid suspicious websites and advertisements. Intrusive ads usually seem legitimate and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.). If you experience unwanted redirects and advertisements, inspect the device and immediately remove all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
