Stop being redirected to and from mediasvideo.live

Also Known As: mediasvideo.live pop-up
Damage level: Medium

What is mediasvideo[.]live?

Similar to notification-list.comsystem-sms.comfacebook-info.com and countless others, mediasvideo[.]live is a rogue website that presents visitors with dubious content and generates redirects to other untrustworthy, even malicious web pages.

Few users access mediasvideo[.]live intentionally - most are redirected by intrusive ads or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already infiltrated on the device. Note that PUAs do not need express user permission to be installed. They operate by causing redirects, hijacking browsers, delivering intrusive advertisement campaigns, and tracking browsing-related data.

mediasvideo[.]live pop-up redirects

mediasvideo[.]live first checks visitors' IP addresses to learn their geolocations. This information is key in determining its further course of action. Depending on the geolocations, users are redirected elsewhere or presented with dubious content. This site uses browser notifications, the consent option to which it hides beneath clickbait ("Click Allow to download the song").

If users are tricked into giving consent, mediasvideo[.]live begins running intrusive ad campaigns. The resultant ads are a safety threat, due to the harmful web pages to which they redirect and for their capability to execute scripts designed to stealthily download/install PUAs.

Unwanted applications also generate redirects to similarly dangerous web pages. Some can run intrusive ad campaigns by implementing various tools and enabling third party graphical content to be displayed on any site, thereby delivering advertisements that diminish the browsing experience by limiting browsing speed and overlaying web page content.

Other PUAs hijack browsers (i.e., make unauthorized changes) and promote fake search engines. Most PUAs have data tracking capabilities. They record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations, and other details).

This private data is then shared with third parties (often, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for financial gain. In summary, these apps can cause browser and system infiltration/infections, and lead to serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.

PUAs often seem legitimate and lure users into downloading/installing them by offering "useful" features. In fact, these functions rarely work as advertised and, in most cases, are nonoperational. The only purpose of all unwanted content is to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no value.

PUAs cause redirects, deliver intrusive ads, hijack browsers, and gather sensitive information.

How did adware install on my computer?

The most common mode of PUA proliferation is via the download/installation set-ups of other software. The deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular programs with unwanted and malicious content is called "bundling".

Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, using pre-set options, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled software onto devices. Some PUAs also have "official" download websites on which they are typically endorsed as "free" and "useful".

When clicked, intrusive ads can download/install these applications without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

Research all content before downloading/installing. Use trustworthy and verified download sources. P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.), unofficial and free file-hosting sites, third party downloaders and similar channels are classed as untrustworthy and should not be used.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads often seem normal and innocuous, however, they can redirect to dubious web pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others).

If you encounter these ads/redirects, inspect the device and immediately remove all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?

Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.

Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
