How to remove "Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses!" from Mac?

What is the "Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses!" scam?

"Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses!" is a scam run on deceptive webpages. This scheme claims that users' browser has been infected with viruses and recommends a dubious piece of software for the removal of the nonexistent threats. Applications promoted using such deceitful methods are usually nonoperational (e.g. fake anti-virus tools, etc.), untrustworthy (e.g. browser hijackers, adware, etc.) and even malicious (e.g. trojans, ransomware, etc.). Few users access scam websites intentionally, most get redirected to them by intrusive advertisements or by PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications), already infiltrated into the system.

Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses! scam

"Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses!" is designed to target iPhone users. However, it is possible that sites promoting this scheme may be accessed (e.g. users can get redirected to them) on other Apple products. This scam states that their device has been damage by 19 viruses. Amongst the detected threats are trojan viruses, which have caused 59% damage to the browser. These fake threats have supposedly originated from recently visited corrupted websites. If the viruses are not eliminated, users can have their Facebook account, WhatsApp messages, photos and information stored on private applications - stolen. Following these deceptive claims, the scheme instructs users to immediately download/install the promoted application, which will allegedly fix the found issues. It must be emphasized that no webpage can actually detect threats/issues present on devices, hence any that claim to be able to - cannot be trusted. Furthermore, software promoted on such sites is highly likely to be untrustworthy and even malicious.

PUAs can force-open deceptive/scam, untrustworthy, rogue, compromised and malicious pages. However, these apps can have other/additional abilities. They can deliver pop-ups, banners, coupons and other intrusive ads. These advertisements severely diminish the browsing experience and upon being clicked - redirect to dangerous websites and some can even execute scripts to stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs). Other unwanted applications can hijack browsers by modifying them, restricting access to their settings and promoting illegitimate search engines. Practically all PUAs can monitor browsing activity (browsing and search engine histories) and gather users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data is typically shared with third parties, seeking to misuse it for financial gain - potentially, by putting it to criminal use. To summarize, presence of PUAs on systems can cause various infiltrations and infections, lead to financial losses, serious privacy issues and identity theft. Therefore, to ensure device and user safety - all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

Guardapl.comoriginalsecureus.comapl-def.com and numberonevpn.com are a few examples of scam webpages, running scams similar to "Your Apple iPhone is severely damaged by 19 viruses!". Online schemes are designed to trick users into performing specific actions, via use of social engineering and scare tactics. They can attempt to push users into: downloading/installing and/or purchasing nonoperational, untrustworthy and malicious software; revealing personal information (e.g. names, addresses, emails, banking account or credit card details, etc.); calling fake and expensive technical support numbers; paying bogus fees/payments and so on. These scams operate in varied ways, however they have but one goal - to generate revenue for the scammers / cyber criminals behind them. Deceptive/Scam pages are common on the Web; hence, it is strongly recommended to exercise caution when browsing.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

PUAs proliferate through download/installation setups of other software. This false marketing technique of pre-packing ordinary products with unwanted or malicious additions. Rushed download and installation processes (e.g. skipped steps and sections, used pre-set options, etc.) - increase the risk of inadvertent installation of bundled content. Some PUAs have "official" promotional webpages, from which they can be downloaded. Intrusive adverts proliferate such apps as well. Once clicked on, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs, without user consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

All software should be researched, before download/installation and/or purchase. It is recommended to always use official and verified download sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders - are deemed to be untrustworthy and can offer deceptive/bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features and so on. Intrusive adverts often appear legitimate and innocuous, however they redirect to various unreliable and questionable websites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others). In case of encounters with ads/redirects of this kind, users should inspect the system and immediately remove all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins from it. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
