How to uninstall unwanted programs downloaded from megaup.net
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is megaup[.]net?
megaUp[.]net is a file hosting and sharing website, which allows users to upload, share, and manage their files. When a user uploads a file, megaUp[.]net creates a download package and link. In this way, it prepares a file for sharing with others, however, megaUp[.]net also includes additional components in the created download package without asking permission.
Package contents are installed when another user opens the downloaded package. Note that packages created by megaUp[.]net can be used to distribute unwanted or even malicious programs.
It is likely that megaUp[.]net creates packages designed to distribute and install adware, browser hijackers and other potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Browser hijackers promote fake search engines by modifying browser settings such as the address of the default search engine, new tab and homepage.
Typically, fake search engines do not generate any unique results, or they simply generate misleading information. These search engines are useless or and potentially dangerous. Adware serves coupons, pop-ups, banners, surveys and other ads. Those can open untrusted web pages or download and install PUAs.
In any case, it is not safe to click advertisements that appear due to installed adware. Note that adware and browser hijackers often collect browsing data (IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, etc.) and sensitive information.
Gathered data is sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misused to generate revenue in other ways. It is possible that that packages created by megaUp[.]net could be used to distribute malicious software such as ransomware, Trojans and other malware.
Ransomware encrypts files, so that victims are unable to access them without specific tools that can only be purchased from the cyber criminals who designed the ransomware. Trojans can cause chain infections by installing other malware, and might steal personal, sensitive information.
Additionally, megaUp[.]net redirects visitors to other untrusted web pages (e.g., sites promoting Booster Search, searchfrit.com) and contains dubious, deceptive advertisements. Therefore, do not trust this site or use it to host or share files.

In summary, files downloaded from mega[.]up can cause installation of software that lead to problems relating to online privacy, browsing safety or more serious issues such as data/financial loss, identity theft, and so on. Therefore, files should be hosted on/shared through legitimate, reputable websites.
Note that if a browser opens dubious web pages automatically, various ads appear on most or all opened pages, etc., it probably has a PUA installed. In most cases, people download and install PUAs inadvertently.
How did adware install on my computer?
Typically, users download or install unwanted apps when they are included into the set-ups of other software as 'additional offers'. These offers tend to be hidden in settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual" or others.
Many users download and install programs with PUAs included in the setups - by failing to check and change these settings, they allow rogue apps to also be downloaded and installed. This distribution method is called "bundling". PUAs are also downloaded and installed when people click ads that then run certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to download files and programs from official websites and via direct download links. Other sources, channels such as third party downloaders (and installers) Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients), unofficial pages, etc., should not be used.
These channels can distribute PUAs and even malicious software. Check all download/installation settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced" and decline offers to download or install potentially unwanted apps before completing the process.
Do not click advertisements that appear on dubious web pages, since they can open other rogue pages or cause unwanted downloads/installations. If a browser causes unwanted redirects or unwanted ads appear regularly, remove all unwanted, unknown extensions, add-ons and plug-ins.
Also remove programs of this kind from the operating system. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
