How to remove apps designed to promote iossecure[.]com from Mac?

What is iossecure[.]com?

Iossecure[.]com is a scam website designed to promote the VPN PROtrack (and very likely other similar apps). Complete protect application. It website promotes that app in a deceptive way - it claims that the operating system is infected with viruses and/or visitor's online activity could be monitored by other parties and offers to solve the problem (remove viruses, protect online privacy) with the aforementioned app. Websites like iossecure[.]com should never be trusted, in most cases they get opened through other shady pages, untrustworthy advertisements or by installed potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

iossecure[.]com scam

There are at least two variants of iossecure[.]com website: one variant is designed to trick visitors into believing that the operating system is damaged by 6 viruses and installing VPN PROtrack. Complete protect app which supposed to remove them. Also, it encourages visitors to remove viruses as soon as possible, otherwise their Apple ID will be blocked and all data stored on iCloud will be deleted. Another variant is designed to trick visitors into believing that someone may be monitoring their online activity and hide their IP address with the same application. Notifications, virus alerts, etc., on websites like iossecure[.]com should never be trusted, and apps through them should never be downloaded. If a web browser opens such pages often, then it is very likely that it causes that because there is some potentially unwanted application installed on it.

Another problem with PUAs is that they can be designed not only to promote untrustworthy sites like iossecure[.]com, but also to gather various information and/or serve advertisements. It is common that PUAs gather details like IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited websites, entered search queries, etc. Although, there are PUAs that can access sensitive information as well. Moreover, there is always a possibility that their developers may sell gathered data to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Also, PUAs can be and often are designed to serve coupons, banners, pop-ups, surveys and/or other types of ads. When clicked, those ads can open various unreliable websites, or even run scripts designed to cause download and/or installation of some unwanted software.

There are other pages like iossecure[.]com, for example, vpnbestapp[.]com, dheje[.]xyz and suprotok[.]xyz. In most cases they are designed to trick users into installing some application that supposed to remove detected viruses, protect online privacy, etc. In one way or another, such pages should be always ignored. As mentioned in the introduction, quite often pages like iossecure[.]com are promoted by PUAs, they are called PUAs because most of the times users download and install them unknowingly.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

It is possible to cause unwanted downloads and/or installations by clicking ada that are designed to run certain scripts. However, in most cases users end up having PUAs downloaded and/or installed when they carelessly download and/or install some other, usually free software. It is common that PUAs are distributed by including them in download and/or installation setups of various software as additional offers. This distribution method is called "bundling". In most cases offers to download and/or install additional software can be found in setup's settings like "Custom", "Advanced". However, not all users check those settings. When they leave them unchanged, they often agree with offers to download and/or install additional, potentially unwanted apps.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised not to download and/or install any software through untrustworthy sources, tools like third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks like torrent clients, eMule, unofficial pages, etc., All software (and files) should be downloaded from official pages and via direct download links. Download and installation setups that have settings like "Advanced", "Custom", "Manual" should be always checked for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Advertisements that appear on questionable pages tend to be designed to open other pages of this kind or even cause unwanted downloads, installations. such ads should not be clicked. Any unwanted extensions, add-ons or plug-ins that are already installed on a web browser should be removed. The same applies to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system/computer. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
