How to remove DigitalEnviroment adware from Mac?

What is DigitalEnviroment?

DigitalEnviroment is an adware-type application with browser hijacker qualities. It operates by delivering intrusive advert campaigns and by making modifications to browser settings - in order to promote fake search engines. Most adware-types and browser hijackers collect browsing-related information and it is very likely that DigitalEnviroment has such data tracking abilities as well. Due to the dubious techniques employed to proliferate this app, it is also considered to be a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application).

DigitalEnviroment adware

Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other intrusive advertisements - typically, on any visited website. Hence, the ads do not originate from the sites themselves but are delivered by adware. Intrusive adverts diminish the browsing experience, as they overlay page content and slow down the browsing speed. Furthermore, once clicked on, the delivered advertisements redirect to various untrustworthy/malicious webpages and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers assign the addresses of fake web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. With a browser hijacker installed: every new browser tab/window opened and web search done via the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address. Illegitimate search engines are usually unable to provide search results, so they redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other genuine ones. What is more, recovering an affected browser is impossible without eliminating the software hijacking it. Since browser hijackers can reset any changes users try to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browser's settings outright. As mentioned in the introduction, most PUAs can track data. They can record browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, etc.) and gather personal information inferred from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other sensitive details). The collected data is then monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, presence of unwanted software on devices can result in system infections, financial losses, severe privacy issues and even identity theft. Therefore, to ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

TypicalOperation, OperativeProgram and ProgressBuffer are some examples of other adware-type apps. They appear legitimate and offer a wide variety of "useful" functions. However, the promised features are rarely operational. In fact, this applies to practically all PUAs. The only goal of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can run intrusive advertisement campaigns, modify browsers, force-open unreliable and malicious sites, collect vulnerable and personally identifiable information.

How did DigitalEnviroment install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other software. "Bundling" is the term used to define this false marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions. Rushed downloads/installations (e.g. ignored terms, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Select PUAs have "official" download webpages. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well. Upon being clicked, the adverts can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without user consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised to research software before download/installation. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - are deemed to be untrustworthy, as these download channels commonly offer harmful and/or bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements typically appear ordinary and harmless, however they redirect to questionable sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be inspected and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with DigitalEnviroment, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
