It is common that people who trust such websites suffer monetary loss, become victims of identity theft, lose access to personal accounts, and/or experience other issues. Therefore, it is strongly recommended no to trust services that such pages offer (or download anything from them). It is worthwhile to mention that quite often various untrustworthy websites are promoted by potentially unwanted applications. As a rule, users download and/or install them unknowingly. Once installed, they make browsers to open a variety of shady pages.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
One of most commonly used methods to distribute unwanted applications is to integrate them in download and/or installation setups of other programs as extra offers. This distribution method is called "bundling". As a rule, users can find and decline offers to download and/or install additionally included apps in "Advanced", "Custom", or other settings of setups. When they complete downloads and/or installations without checking and changing those settings, then they allow for those included apps to be downloaded and/or installed too. Also, sometimes unwanted downloads, installations can be caused by clicking unreliable, deceptive advertisements. However, such advertisements can cause it only if they are designed to execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is not recommended to download and/or install programs through third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks like eMule, torrent clients, untrustworthy pages, etc. They can be used as tools to distribute unwanted, potentially malicious programs. All users should download files and programs only from official websites and via direct links. Another way to prevent unwanted downloads and installations is by checking setups for "Custom", "Advanced" settings and declining offers to download and/or install additionally included apps. Advertisements that appear on shady pages often open other untrustworthy websites. Also, they can cause downloads, installations of PUAs. Therefore, such ads should not be trusted (clicked) as well. If there are any unwanted extensions, add-ons or plug-ins installed on a browser, then they should be removed from it right away. The same should be done with programs of this kind that are installed on a computer. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
