How to remove ScalableRemote adware from Mac?

What is ScalableRemote?

ScalableRemote is a piece of rogue software, categorized as adware. It also possesses browser hijacker traits. Following successful installation, this application runs intrusive advertisement campaigns and makes modifications to browsers - in order to promote fake search engines. Additionally, most adware-types and browser hijackers have data tracking abilities, which are employed to spy on users' browsing activity. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute ScalableRemote, it is also considered to be a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application).

ScalableRemote adware

Adware delivers pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other intrusive ads. They overlay webpage content and limit browsing speed, thereby severely crippling the browsing experience. Once clicked on, intrusive adverts redirect to various untrustworthy/malicious websites and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers operate by reassigning browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs - to the addresses of fake web searchers. Therefore, with such a piece of software installed: every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address. Illegal search engines are rarely able to provide search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Bing, Google and other genuine ones. Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers, if they permit access to the browser's settings in the first place. As mentioned in the introduction, most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) can track data. They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, presence of unwanted software on devices can lead to system infections, financial losses, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

LearningActivityWebNewSearchAnalyticParameter and CommonGeneration are some examples of other adware-type apps. They appear legitimate and offer a broad range of "handy" functions. However, the promised functionalities are seldom operational. This applies to nearly all PUAs. The only goal of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers; to users - it has no real value and may cause severe problems. Instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects and collect private data.

How did ScalableRemote install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other software. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps, used pre-set options, etc.) - increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Upon being clicked, the adverts can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without user permission. This software may also have "official" promotional sites, from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is important to research products before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Since untrustworthy download channels, e.g. unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - commonly offer bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads appear legitimate, however they redirect to various unreliable and questionable webpages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on). In case of encounters with advertisements and/or redirects of this kind - the system must be inspected and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with ScalableRemote, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
