How to remove CoVideoSearch from browsers and computers

Also Known As: covideosearch.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is CoVideoSearch?

CoVideoSearch promotes a fake search engine (covideosearch.com) by modifying web browser settings and is also likely to collect browsing data. Users often download and install browser hijackers inadvertently and, for this reason, CoVideoSearch is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA).

covideosearch.com browser hijacker

The main purpose of browser hijackers is to replace the address of the existing homepage, new tab page, and default search engine with its own URL. CoVideoSearch replaces those addresses with covideosearch.com so that users are forced to visit this site when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar.

Note that covideosearch.com redirects users to search.yahoo.com. I.e., this fake search engine simply displays results generated by Yahoo. Typically, modifications made by browser hijackers can only be undone only when the rogue software is no longer installed on the browser and/or the operating system.

The same applies to the changes made by the CoVideoSearch browser hijacker. CoVideoSearch also gathers information relating to users' browsing habits. Usually apps of this type target geolocations, entered search queries, URLs of visited websites, and IP addresses, however, some browser hijackers collect private, sensitive information as well.

The developers sell gathered data to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Therefore, users of hijacked browsers might encounter problems relating to online privacy, web browsing safety, and even identity theft.

To summarize, browser hijackers promote search engines that do not generate any unique search results. In some cases, they generate results that include links to untrusted, potentially malicious websites.

Neither browser hijackers nor fake search engines should be used. Some examples of PUAs that are also classified as browser hijackers include ProConverterSearch, GameSearchWeb and SmartStreamSearch.

How did CoVideoSearch install on my computer?

Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).

Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to download files and programs from official websites and via direct download links. Other tools and sources such as third party downloaders and installers, unofficial pages, and Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients) should not be used to download or install software.

Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings (or available checkboxes) for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Do not click ads on dubious websites, since they can be designed to open bogus web pages or cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind from the operating system. If your computer is already infected with CoVideoSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
