How to remove apps that promote the Error # WINDOWS-PORN-91 scam

Also Known As: Error # WINDOWS-PORN-91 technical support scam
Damage level: Medium

What is Error # WINDOWS-PORN-91?

Like many other technical support scam websites, this one attempts to trick visitors into believing that, unless they call the provided number and solve the problem, their files will be damaged and personal information will be stolen, etc.

Usually, scammers behind these pages attempt to trick unsuspecting users into paying for unnecessary services and software, or even providing remote access to their computers. These websites should never be trusted.

Note that users do not often visit these sites intentionally - in most cases, they are opened via clicked deceptive ads, other dubious web pages, or by installed potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

Error # WINDOWS-PORN-91 scam

The text on this scam web page is in German, however, visitors from different countries may see text in different languages. This website attempts to trick visitors into believing that their computers are locked to prevent further damage and infected with a virus and spyware. Data such as email and Facebook login credentials, credit card details, and some personal files have supposedly been stolen.

Its main purpose is to deceive visitors into contacting scammers by calling the 044 586 76 58 number. In most cases, when scammers behind these pages are contacted, they try to trick users into paying for unnecessary software and services.

They often ask users for permission to remotely access their computers. By gaining such access, scammers can install malware onto the operating system (e.g., ransomware, Trojan-type malware), steal personal information or use systems for other malicious purposes.

In any case, technical support scam pages should be ignored. If the web page cannot be closed normally, end the browser process via Task Manager. Note that, in such cases, the last browsing session should not be restored, since this will return you to the same scam page.

More examples of similar scams are "Killer's IP Address", "Google Chrome Blocked For Security Reasons" and "Windows Error Code: WIN.DLL0151930". They often appear similar to official Microsoft web pages, however, neither the Microsoft company nor its support service has anything to do with these pages.

Browsers commonly open these pages when PUAs (e.g., browser hijacker, adware-type app) are installed on them.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).

Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

You are advised to download files and programs from official websites and via direct download links. Other tools and sources such as third party downloaders and installers, unofficial pages, and Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., eMule, torrent clients) should not be used to download or install software.

Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings (or available checkboxes) for offers to download and/or install unwanted apps. Do not click ads on dubious websites, since they can be designed to open bogus web pages or cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any unwanted, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons installed on the browser, and software of this kind from the operating system.

If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
