Avoid losing your cryptocurrency to the "SHIBA (SHIB) Giveaway" scam
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is "SHIBA (SHIB) Giveaway"?
"SHIBA (SHIB) Giveaway" is a scam promoted on various deceptive sites. This fake giveaway promises twice the return in Shiba Inu coin/ Shiba Token (SHIB) cryptocurrency that users invest in it.
In other words, the scam asks users to transfer at least 200,000,000 SHIB to the provided address and promises that they will immediately receive two times the amount back. It must be emphasized that this giveaway and all of its claims are false.
Hence, victims of this scheme will not receive the doubled amount, and they will also lose what they have already transferred to the scam. Deceptive websites are rarely accessed intentionally.
Most users enter them via mistyped URLs, redirects caused by intrusive advertisements, or have the webpages force-opened by installed PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
The "SHIBA (SHIB) Giveaway" is presented as an effort to encourage cryptocurrency mass adoption. The fake fund pool is one trillion Shiba Inu coins (1,000,000,000,000 SHIB).
To participate in the scam giveaway, users are asked to transfer from two hundred million (200,000,000 SHIB) to fifteen billion (15,000,000,000 SHIB) Shiba Inu coins to the contribution address. At the current exchange rate, these sums are worth from three thousand to over two hundred thousand in US dollars (note, conversion rates constantly fluctuate; hence, the conversion is likely to be inaccurate in the future).
The scheme promises that participants will immediately receive double the amount back. Additionally, the scam claims that there is a 10-50% bonus - depending on the transferred sum.
As mentioned in the introduction, the "SHIBA (SHIB) Giveaway" is fake. Therefore, by trusting it, users will only experience financial loss and possibly other serious issues as well.
PUAs are primary suspects behind rogue redirects to sale-based, untrustworthy, deceptive/scam, compromised, and malicious websites. However, unwanted apps can have other/additional heinous abilities.
Apart from force-opening pages, PUAs can operate as adware. This type runs intrusive advertisement campaigns (i.e., delivers various adverts).
The ads severely diminish the browsing experience and pose a threat to device/user safety. Intrusive advertisements promote unreliable/dangerous sites, and some can stealthily download/install software - when clicked on. Browser hijackers are another type of PUAs; they modify browser settings and restrict access to them - in order to promote fake search engines.
The search engines this software causes redirects to - usually cannot generate search results. Hence, they tend to redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing, and other legitimate ones.
Furthermore, most PUAs (regardless of type) can track data. Information of interest includes: browsing activity, IP addresses/ geolocations, personally identifiable details, and so forth.
The gathered data is monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals). To summarize, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft. It is strongly recommended to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

"Doge Giveaway", "SAFEMOON Giveaway", "Dogelon Mars (ELON) giveaway", "Ethereum Giveaway", and "LiteCoin Giveaway" are some examples of fake cryptocurrency giveaways. There are thousands of deceptive/scam sites on the Web.
They use a wide variety of techniques and disguises to gain and abuse users' trust. Commonly used scam models are: fake giveaways, promotions, and lotteries; ludicrous deals and offers; warnings that the system is infected or at risk; alerts that an important software product is outdated or missing.
Regardless of what these schemes claim, promise, offer, request, or demand, the end-goal is the same - to generate revenue for the scammers/ cyber criminals behind them. Due to how widespread this deceptive content is online, it is advised to exercise caution when browsing.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
PUAs can have "official" download webpages, which are often promoted by deceptive/scam sites. These applications are most commonly downloaded/installed together with other programs.
"Bundling" is the name of this false marketing tactic - pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions. Rushed download/installation processes (e.g., ignored terns, skipped steps, used "Quick/Easy" settings, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive adverts are also used to spread PUAs. Once clicked on, the advertisements can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to always research products before download/installation and/or purchase. Additionally, only official and verified download channels must be used.
Untrustworthy sources, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloads - offer harmful and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, functions, and other additions. Intrusive adverts appear ordinary and innocuous; however, they redirect to unreliable and dubious webpages (e.g., pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, the system must be checked and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - removed from it without delay. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
