What is Surftastic?
Developed by SuperWeb LLC, Surftastic is a potentially unwanted browser plug-in claiming to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by displaying websites with related content, website trust ratings, enabling comparison shopping, coupons, and adding other useful functionality.
Although Surftastic may seem legitimate, users should be aware that it is categorized as adware. Surftastic uses a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' to install on browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) without users' consent.
After successful infiltration, the plug-in generates various types of intrusive advertisements, including transitional, interstitial, text link, search, banner, and full page ads.
As well as generating advertisements, Surftastic tracks users' Internet browsing activity - recording software and hardware information including unique identifier numbers, IP addresses, search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other information. This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues, identity theft, or malware infections.
None of these add any real value for the user. This company intentionally releases identical plug-ins under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-virus and anti-spyware software. The actual purpose of these browser add-ons is to generate income by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Users commonly install potentially unwanted applications along with freeware. Users should be aware that the majority of current freeware download websites use 'download clients' to monetize their free services.
Download clients offer installation of 'legitimate' browser extensions together with the chosen free software, however, if users agree to install promoted browser plug-ins, they run a high risk of computer infection with adware or malware.
To prevent the installation of Surftastic, or other adware, express caution when downloading freeware and decline offers of installation of any additional applications.
During installation of downloaded software, choose the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' installation options, rather than 'Typical' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any bundled applications listed for installation along with the chosen free software. Users who observe "Powered by Surftastic", "Surftastic Deals", and "Ads by Surftastic" when browsing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to eliminate Surftastic adware from their Internet browser/s.
